(Alberta Premier)Jason Kenney considers Alberta's own chief firearms officer to replace Trudeau's

Jason Kenney is clearly not a fan of Prime Minister Trudeau's new ban of 1,500 firearms. In response, he is considering appointing Alberta's own chief firearms officer to replace the CFO from Ottawa.

“In response to today’s announcement from Ottawa, our government is actively considering appointing Alberta’s own chief firearms officer (CFO) to replace the CFO appointed by Ottawa,” said Kenney in a statement.

The ban on 1,500 new firearms was announced Friday morning by Trudeau in a press conference. "These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest period of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada. Effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import, or use military-grade assault weapons in this country," Trudeau said Friday morning.

"Today’s order by Ottawa does little to target criminals. Instead, Ottawa is singling out law-abiding Canadians who purchased their property legally, have owned these items safely for years, and who have committed no crimes," Kenney said.

“We know that the overwhelming majority of firearms used criminally in Canada are smuggled in illegally from the United States. Instead of addressing this, Ottawa will instead spend vast sums of money to criminalize law-abiding Canadians. That money would be far better used to pursue the smugglers and drug gangs that plague our society.”

The Chief Firearms Officer of every province enforces gun control law within each province or territory. They are appointed by Trudeau with provincial acquiescence. Hopefully every province will follow suit.

Alberta Statement:

“The Government of Alberta is concerned about all crime, including the illegal use of firearms. Today’s order by Ottawa does little to target criminals. Instead, Ottawa is singling out law-abiding Canadians who purchased their property legally, have owned these items safely for years, and who have committed no crimes,” stated Alberta Premier Jason Kenney.

“We know that the overwhelming majority of firearms used criminally in Canada are smuggled in illegally from the United States. Instead of addressing this, Ottawa will instead spend vast sums of money to criminalize law-abiding Canadians. That money would be far better used to pursue the smugglers and drug gangs that plague our society,” added Kenney.

“We also know that violent criminals who use guns are often released with surprisingly soft sentences. Rather than focus on law-abiding Canadians, we’d call on Parliament to bring back tough, mandatory sentences for the criminals who flagrantly endanger Canadians with their use of illegal guns,” implored Alberta Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer.

In November 2019, the Alberta legislature unanimously passed Government Motion 41, which stated:

“Be it resolved that the Legislative Assembly recognize and support the ability of Albertans to lawfully and in a responsible manner own and possess firearms and to engage in permitted activities involving the use of firearms, including but not limited to hunting and sport shooting.”

“The Government of Alberta will scrutinize today’s move by Ottawa and explore potential responses through this lens,” said Schweitzer.

“In response to today’s announcement from Ottawa, our government is actively considering appointing Alberta’s own chief firearms officer (CFO) to replace the CFO appointed by Ottawa,” concluded Kenney.

Maybe that SOz should go live at a ranch on the Mexican border, then see if he wouldn't beg for a gun designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible.

No one bothers to explain how Trudeau just “bans” certain categories of firearms.

Doesn’t Parliament have to pass a law? Is he simply allowed to broadly interpret some very vague and general law (as we often do in the USA also)?

AS a US citizen having lived 40 years in Constitutional Carry Vermont, now living in Canada because of marriage, I am all for it.

Alberta would vote to do it in a heart beat.

Done by executive order. But confiscating guns ( buy back) will require new legislation, and that will not likely happen IMHO.And if it does, Canadians won’t go for it.

Funny, when my grandfather and his older brother (whose firearms have been mine for a number of years) were growing up in Grey County, Ontario about a century ago, I doubt if there were any Chief Firearms Officers around (and there would have been that great deal less violence).

Alberta and Saskatchewan should tell Trudeau to pound sand. BC, Quebec, and Ontario will gladly follow his edicts.

Good luck enforcing this in Yukon!

A few years ago we were vacationing in Guadeloupe and got friendly with a couple from Alberta. One of the things the husband said to me about Alberta that I found funniest, and most interesting, was "well, just think of Alberta as Canada's Texas".

And that's been my mindset ever since.

Thanks for that. Just a few questions / comments

- Canada Gazette is basically the same as the US Federal Register, correct? ie) proclamations on how government executive agencies will specifically implement laws?

- Per my quick reading of this - Trudeau’s and his Ministry of Justice are justifying this by declaring administrative/regulatory revisions to an existing gun-control Act of Parliament, and are also immediately declaring a 2 year amnesty, at which time he will try to implement a “buy back.” Is this correct?

- That’s a hell of a long and detailed list of specific makes and models of weapons. No doubt it was prepared well in advance, just waiting for a pretext to roll it out

No need to enforce. Ban the sale of .223, 5.56 and 7.62, including reloading components, and people will eventually run out.

The technology to swage 223 bullets from spent 22 lr cases has been known for decades. The enterprising ammunition maker isn't going to let some government wonkas intrude on his practice.
