Second lady Karen Pence said Thursday that Vice President Pence had been unaware of the Mayo Clinic's policy requiring all visitors to wear a face covering until after he left the facility on Tuesday.
"As our medical experts have told us, wearing a mask prevents you from spreading disease. And knowing he doesnt have COVID-19, he didnt wear one," she said on "Fox & Friends."
"It was actually after he left Mayo Clinic that he found out they had a policy of asking everyone to wear a mask," the second lady continued. "So someone whos worked on this whole task force for over two months is not someone who would have done anything to offend anyone or hurt anyone or scare anyone."
The vice president's visit to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was intended to highlight research being done on treatments for the coronavirus, specifically how the blood of recovering patients can be used. But the trip was largely overshadowed by his decision not to wear a face covering in defiance of the clinic's policy.
Pence was the only individual spotted without a mask during his visit as he participated in a tour and held a roundtable discussion with physicians, nurses and researchers. Everyone else seen on camera with Pence had masks on, including Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn.
On Tuesday, the clinic tweeted, then deleted, a message that it informed Pence of its masking policy prior to his arrival in Rochester.
"Mayo shared the masking policy with the VPs office," the clinic said in an emailed statement after deleting the tweet.

Why delete the tweet?
And if it was a concern everyone should wear a mask why did no one at the Mayo Clinic ask VP Pence to wear a mask when he entered the clinic? Did someone want him on video not wearing a mask?
I like Pence but the mans a twit.
Either he comes out and defends himself by saying he had the corona or that the risk of transmission was minimal or he owns up to it.
Not responding - letting his wife make excuses for him is poor behavior politically.
But then this is how he acted during the entire RFRA debacle.
We gotta start finding someone to run for 2024
Is this going to be Mask Gate now?
/facepalm
I can’t wear a mask regardless of what the Mayo Clinic policy is anyway, so I’m not about to say anyone else has to.
Of course they did not want him wearing a mask. Photo op.
Creeps.
These “medical experts” have yet to explain to me how something as tiny as a virus will be stopped by plain cloth.
It’s like trying to stop a sandstorm with a chain link fence.
I am not a fan of masks. No way, no how.
HOWEVER....
If I were #2 in the line of succession, AND I was walking into a world-famous clinic that houses one of the biggest collections of exotic germs in the world, you bet your sweet bippy I’d be wearing a mask.
Wonder if the hospital admin. failed to make the VP (or his staff) aware prior to or upon arrival deliberately. Stranger things have happened. IMO its incumbent upon the hospital to make sure everyone is aware of their policies.
Why didn’t one of the idiots there tell him and give him a mask , D’oh
Might just opt for the full blown biohazard suit
If a mask is required inside a hospital, then cancel the visit or hold an open-air event outside (if it isn't needed there).
Thsts what makes me think they did not tell him deliberately
In other words , It Was A Trap
His wife only mentioned it because she was asked about it.
Yep. Might be interesting to look into who the admin(s) are at that facility. Political leanings and such.
And so no one there politely reminded the VP that he was required to wear a mask?
They just let him proceed?
This one’s on Mayo. That he’s the VP is all the more reason Mayo should have requested the mask. And for anyone who accompanied him.
The amount of intelligence and science briefings Pence has had on this subject, not just medical training in general , but detailed specific training on this virus, how lethal it really is , how it spreads , who is spreading it ,the ineffectiveness of masks .. AND his life on the line, plus knowing he is not infected probably updated hourly, Pence knows what he was doing. Shouldn’t we be questing the intellect of the press for being this clueless , not the other way around... ?
Either spineless drones were afraid to tell the VP what to do or evil thugs wanted to set the VP up. Either way, it’s a sad commentary on Mayo.
Its not a factor of defending himself - its taking a stand.
If, as I believe, he did it because he knows theres no risk he should say so to further buttress governors who are reopening under attacks.
Thats called leadership.
