Give the guy a break. He's not "defending himself" because nobody has asked him anything about it directly. You can be sure a question about it will be put to him the next time he's at a COVID-19 press briefing.

It’s not a factor of defending himself - it’s taking a stand.

If, as I believe, he did it because he knows there’s no risk he should say so to further buttress governors who are reopening under attacks.

That’s called leadership.
