Trump Surprised After Yahoo Reporter Apologizes to Him for Misinformation
Townhall ^ | 04/29/2020 | Cortney O' Brien

A Yahoo! reporter got his facts wrong during President Trump's briefing with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Tuesday. The reporter, Hunter Walker, asked Trump why South Korea was far outpacing the U.S. on testing per capita. A surprised President Trump shot back that Walker's numbers didn't sound quite right, and Dr. Deborah Birx confirmed his suspicions a few minutes later. Addressing Walker, Birx corrected him that while South Korea is at 11 tests per 100,000, the U.S. is at 17 per 100,000.

"Alright, are you going to apologize Yahoo!?" Trump asked the reporter. "That's why nobody knows who you are, including me."

Birx was a bit more civil, simply telling Walker to double check his numbers.

Then something amazing happened. He actually apologized.

In the Oval Office, I asked about test rates and infection rates compared to South Korea. President Trump and Dr. Birx said I was wrong that they've done more tests per capita. Trump said I should apologize. They did not address multiple questions about our higher infection rate.— Hunter Walker (@hunterw) April 28, 2020

We have passed South Korea in the number of tests conducted per capita. I misread the mobile version of this chart and am sorry about that @realDonaldTrump . Our infection rate is far higher though as I noted.— Hunter Walker (@hunterw) April 28, 2020

Instead of continuing to gloat, Trump was grateful for the apology. He thanked Walker during his White House press conference with small business owners who shared their testimonies about how they had benefitted from the Payment Protection Program.

Continuing to gloat? When was the first gloat?

Clintonesque “I’m-only-sorry-I-got-caught” non-apology.

So little Hunter was half right so therefore all is good in his world of spewing misinformation.

Good, also need Political to make an apology. Implying Trump owed China when he did not. A fake story that trended on twitter the weekend and all last Friday.

editor's note - POLITICO’s reporting on President Trump and the Bank of China

There is one fact I haven’t heard challenged: A couple weeks ago Birx said she can “tell by the numbers that everyone isn’t following social distancing” precisely”.

There is no way this variable affecting Covid-positive diagnoses can be known within about plus or minus 75% accuracy. I can’t wait for the real numbers to shake out, assuming we can ever get straight data. It’s like expecting to get unadulterated historical weather data.

Is anyone other than Dr. Oz addressing the notion that a more virulent strain hit the east coast? I need to do more reading, I guess.

Well, PDJT has demonstrated he has a long memory and if nothing else, Walker will now get remembered.... if not for the apology, for the half-apology and it’s that ‘half’ business that means Walker can expect to be the brunt of a terse reply by PDJT on a future question.

Trump had proven his point. He could afford to be gracious.

Notice how he had to throw in the 'barb' about the higher infection rate at the end of the tweet. Doesn't a higher infection rate (which likely includes many asymptomatic cases) indicate that we have a lower overall death rate since the denominator in the deaths divided by infections ratio is higher?

Dr Oz? That guy is the Captain Kangaroo of medicine.

The word you are looking for is not Virulent - it’s infectious or transmissible.
Virulent means it would have “worse or more deadly” action.

The higher deaths in NY area have been rightly explained and attributed to NY areas higher population density, and improper government policies (like for example sending confirmed COVID patients into nursing homes that did not have any COVID in them before). Also, decreasing the number of subway cars and buses (keeping the fewer riders still crammed together).

If you have a 55% higher test rate you’ll get a higher infection rate.

At least it wasn’t, “Trump paused briefly from devouring human souls to grunt and snort his passing approval.”

No that wasn't in the body of the story, it was probably the headline :)

What apology? This is the way he should have apologized: 1.) Start with, “I was wrong.” (Not someone else said I was wrong. 2.) State, what he was wrong about, “I was wrong about saying South Korea numbers were better than the United States, and President Trump had the correct numbers. I implied that President Trump was wrong.” “However ... 3.) State again, “I was wrong”. 4.) Show sincerity and contrition, “For this I am very sorry”. 5.) End it right there. Don’t say anything more. He needs to shut his pie hole.
