President Donald Trump floated a proposal that would see the government purchase years of tickets from airlines at a discount.
Speaking Friday at a bill signing, the president said he spoke with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
“I told Steve we’re the biggest user of the airlines—the United States government. And one of the ways we can help the airlines is buy tickets at a very large discount, maybe 50 percent off or maybe more,” Trump said.
“And you buy into four or five years’ worth of tickets, and you infuse them with some cash. And in the meantime, we’re flying the people of our country for, you know, a fraction of the cost that it would be if the—you know, when the airlines get back.”
Trump said he’s liked the idea for a while.

why not let people buy years worth for discounted prices? Sell a certain amount of miles, on a certain airline- no? Bad idea?

Actually, it was proposed by Mark Cuban. Heard it during an interview last week or so.
Clever. Sort of like how he wanted to fill the strategic petroleum reserve now while the price is right.

Don’t forget that some of the ‘clowns in charge’ were against PDJTs idea of replenishing the Reserve Supply while oil was/is being ‘given away’.
The same ones here will agree to give the Airlines BIG cash bucks but probably will gripe about making them commit to honoring tickets tomorrow bought today.
And can’t really trust some of them to get the money THEN shut down or declare bankruptcy....

Can’t say it enough....REALLY wish PDJT would sign an EO ordering everyone to inhale and exhale every few seconds and we may lose a good # of these ‘anti PDJT’ Schiffheads.

Does that solve the problem? So the government would be flying at a discount for years? How does that help the airlines?

Don’t know. Heard Cuban say it during an interview on Fox News when they were asking him if he would be on the advisory panel if asked. Maybe it was his idea, maybe it wasn’t.

That’s what I like about Trump. He takes the best ideas from whomever and gets things done.
It gives them a cash infusion up front ... to carry them through the current crisis.
When things get back to "normal," the government will be flying at a discount but everyone else will be paying face value.
