America Shouldn’t Have to Play by New York Rules
The New York Times ^ | April 24, 2020 | Bret Stephens

Posted on 04/24/2020 8:35:20 PM PDT by KingofZion

In 1976, the artist Saul Steinberg drew a cover for The New Yorker — “View of the World from Ninth Avenue” — that became an instant classic. You know the one: Manhattan heavily in the foreground, the Hudson River, a brownish strip called “Jersey,” the rest of the America vaguely in the distance.

It could almost be a map of the coronavirus epidemic in the United States.

***As of Friday, there have been more Covid-19 fatalities on Long Island’s Nassau County (population 1.4 million) than in all of California (population 40 million). There have been more fatalities in Westchester County (989) than in Texas (611). The number of Covid deaths per 100,000 residents in New York City (132) is more than 16 times what is in America’s next largest city, Los Angeles (8). If New York City proper were a state, it would have suffered more fatalities than 41 other states combined.

It isn’t hard to guess why. New York has, by far, the highest population density in the U.S. among cities of 100,000 or more. Commuters crowd trains, office workers crowd elevators, diners crowd restaurants.

Consider a thought experiment in which metropolitan New York weren’t just its own state, but its own country. What would the crisis for what remained of America look like, then? In this slightly smaller nation of a little more than 300 million people, the death toll would amount to about 7.5 per 100,000, slightly above Germany’s levels.

No wonder so much of America has dwindling sympathy with the idea of prolonging lockdown conditions much further. The curves are flattening; hospital systems haven’t come close to being overwhelmed; Americans have adapted to new etiquettes of social distancing.

It’s frustrating how things are getting political on this.

The liberal view is that we need to maintain lockdowns everywhere. The conservative view is that we need to reopen the economy, because the economic and social costs will be too great if we stay shut down.

Question — If the media weren’t headquartered in New York, and New York was not the epicenter of this, would this virus be getting saturation coverage on the news night after night????

How much of the media coverage, is driven by the members of the media being in the center of this, and seeing the worst of it in their own backyard? And related to that, a certain media arrogance that anything that happens in New York is worthy of national news coverage, because it’s happening in New York?

If there was a bad virus outbreak centered in Montana, would it be getting saturation coverage on the network news?

Yet liberals in a handful of counties want to control the entire country.

Actually, based on my analysis New York State has the second-highest size- and time-adjusted fatality total behind San Marno. NYS is waaaay higher than Spain or Italy.

Getting? They’ve been political from the beginning, when Trump was being called racist for imposing travel restrictions from China at the end of January.

Our society is so insane that we will eventually turn it into a true post apocalyptic Hollywood horror movie come to fruition. We are just watching left and right play kid games. While America acts like a schoolyard, our enemies sharpen knives and will just blow another Corona into our air.

But we always do.

9/11 sent our kids to die and be dismembered for that city.

Today we heap debt on our kids for that Blue city.

I no longer care about 9/11 and I hope God wipes that city from the face of the earth.

Damn Cuomo...I'm in Upstate. We do get out, wear our masks and gloves. In my Town of 45,000, we've had 6 cases and that was more than a month ago and no new cases.

No reason to keep the barber shops and hair dressers closed. They can all use throw away capes and they sterilize their tools.

Masks and gloves on both parties.

Open it up...people need Sunshine and Fresh Air and exercise.

It’s really not complicated. The virus is an excuse for Leftists to implement a general strike against capitalism.

The 2009 Swine Flue pandemic also had dire predictions and modeling from the same source, Neil Ferguson, but the Leftists didn’t hype it. Governments weren’t shut down and in the end the models were shown to be way over hyped. Yet Neil Ferguson remained to strike again in 2020.

Combined, New York and New Jersey are 9% of the US population; have 42% of confirmed coronavirus cases, and 53% of coronavirus deaths.
