Kemp defends decision to reopen Georgia after Trump rebuke
The Washington Examiner ^ | April 23, 2020 | Jason Schaumburg

Not long after President Donald Trump said Wednesday he disagreed with Gov. Brian Kemp's decision to start reopening Georgia's economy on Friday, Kemp took to Twitter to defend his decision.

"Earlier today, I discussed Georgia's plan to reopen shuttered businesses for limited operations with [President Trump]," Kemp tweeted. "I appreciate his bold leadership and insight during these difficult times and the framework provided by the White House to safely move states forward. "Our next measured step is driven by data and guided by state public health officials. We will continue with this approach to protect the lives — and livelihoods — of all Georgians." Kemp issued an executive order Monday allowing gyms, fitness centers, bowling alleys, body art studios, barbers, cosmetologists, nail technicians and beauty schools to reopen Friday. Theaters, private social clubs and dine-in restaurants can reopen Monday with some restrictions.

Looks like despite getting Trumpslapped Gov. Kemp is not backing down. We are just hours away from a Georgia reopening.

Cue Tom Petty and the Won't Back Down music.

Perhaps the critics are right. Perhaps there will be a virus rebound and this will be a total disaster.

We are going to find out.

I disagree with Trump on this one. I think he wants to get re-elected and he knows his position will not turn his base away but may soften the hearts of some in the middle.

Love it! That said, I think Trump didn’t know what he was talking about ... the barbers and tattoo artistas are supposed to be swathed in PPE, use disposable everything and even...get this - wear those plastic face shields.

I hope Kemp fights back, because that might encourage DeSantis of FLorida to get moving again, or at any rate, tell the mayors and county commissioners (who are really the ones blocking it) to get going.

Hoping Kemp hangs tough. MSM is desperate to stop him. Dr Doom’s fraud will be exposed.

Btw I tried to contact Kemp but they have a lousy website and contact system. I live just across the border in Jax and I wanted to send him some support. Anybody know how to do this?

I am hitting the gym at 10 AM tomorrow. They sent me an email that they are opening. Love that he didn’t allow local governments to close private businesses.

Then I am going to get a haircut. On Monday, I am going to a restaurant and eating at an actual table.

He better not back down now.

Yeah but what does the real governor of Georgia, Stephanie Abrams think? ;-)

One country did not SHUTDOWN, Sweden.
And the infection/mortality rate in Sweden is no higher than most anywhere else.

I was making a philosophical point.

All of the debates and nattering over projections based on lousy data will come to an end. Because this is going to be a real-world test.

I will pray that his plan works, and Georgia can get back on track. Somebody has to make the decision, and this guy is willing to do that, and live with it. The rest of the country has to take the same chance...the sooner, the better.

I think he wants to get re-elected and he knows his position will not turn his base away”

How does he know that?

By publicly dumping on Kemp’s decision, Trump may have made other governors more reluctant to open their economies any time soon, because they don’t know what Trump will say for or against them in public.

If the effect is to slow the economic reopening, Trump’s reelection chances go down.

Economic depressions are not good for incumbents.

I have been a Trump supporter since the elevator day - and argued with Cruzbots for months until they finally came around. I desperately want him reelected - but that’s one reason I’m so angry about him throwing Kemp under the bus. It looks weak, it looks disloyal, and it hurts the prospects of us getting out of this mess sooner rather than sometime after Biden is inaugurated.

It would be nice if our president would say what you just said, instead of undercutting Kemp.

Fantastic!

Hate to say it, but Trump was wrong on this one. Hope it was a head fake as some here think. I wondered if it has occurred to anyone that these small parlors are probably owned and staffed by people just climbing up the first rungs of the American Dream, and their economic demise would be absolutely brutal?

Washington Post is calling Georgia America’s number one death destination. And that is tame compared to the comments from readers.

I suspect DJT and Kemp have had a few phone calls in which Kemp agreed to take the hit from DJT to allow the President to seem cautious and gain some cred AND put the feces throwing monkeys into stillness.

It doesn’t matter what position the President takes, he’ll be slammed in the media, and by the Democrats whatever it is. I just saw today that they are adding military cameras on the border, and all the headlines are saying that “despite a drop in border crossings, cameras are being added to the wall.” To me they’re complaining about this move, almost as if it’s an overstep. Yet cameras were one of the main things Democrats promoted instead of building the actual wall. So, whether the cameras were or weren’t added, the media would find some reason to complain about it.
