An expert with the United States Studies Centre says that America is on the brink of mass civil unrest that threatens to emerge out of anti-lockdown protests now taking place nationwide.
Demonstrations against coronavirus stay-at-home measures have exploded across the country over the last week after President Trump encouraged them on social media. The National Guard has been called out in some areas to deal with potential disorder.
Speaking to Sky News Australia, James Brown, a former Australian Army officer who commanded a cavalry troop in southern Iraq, said that the very specific mentality of Americans made them much more likely to rebel against lockdown measures compared to citizens of other countries.
There is that part of the US political psyche that takes rights to a complete extreme, said Brown, adding that mass civil unrest is an ever present possibility due to Americans sharing a deep independent streak that believes the government is a nice-to-have not a must-have.

30% of Bolshekrat voters are easy to spot.
The US went from a fledgling nation to the largest economy in the history of the Earth in a little over a century. And kept growing from there. A while after that, the greatest military, ever, and an unprecedented, unmatched engine for advances in science and technology. All the while, a magnet for immigration from all over the world.
How does this “expert” explain that? Is that the sort of “extreme” that’s he’s concerned about?
The only thing I disagree with is “government is a nice-to-have not a must-have”. I look at it more like a necessary evil. Other than that, I think he is pretty much spot on.
Another asinine talking head.
I’ve said the end of May is about as long as we’ll put up with this.
“There is that part of the US political psyche that takes rights to a complete extreme”
More like “places proper value on rights”.
“When the people fear the government you have tyranny, when the government fears the people you have liberty” Jefferson
We really need experts to tell us what we already know. /s
No more exaggerated than this Corona virus scare. Only a different flavor of the fear or greed story.
People are driven by greed and fear.
That is how the stock market works.
That is why we ran out of toilet paper.
Fear and greed are powerful primal forces. The makers of the Corona virus scare of 2019-2020 did just that, tap into fear.
When you get various and multiple major social driving forces all converging with a common interest, even if it isn’t outright a “conspiracy,” just like a conspiracy they all have a vested interest in pushing some agenda albeit for different motivations and without the conspiratorial element. Think of it like this, you and I can have a common interest and even though we do not talk or draft up some grand plan we still work towards a common goal.
In this case, you had Hollywood (mass producing movies about this topic and a vast segment of the population very sensitive), politicians that use this in opposition politics (Schummer and Pelosi early on) or to grand stand (Look at Cuomo from New York), you had the news that had an story people tuned into (high ratings 24/7), some experts and institutions that get their 15 minutes of fame (look at John Hopkins), a few government agencies that also stood to benefit (CDC, NIH, etc.) and you end up with a sort of perfect storm.
Jose running his tacaria isn’t going to stand in thier way. He’s just barely making it and isn’t a major consideration for these forces unless they want his vote and pretend to care for a few days before an election. In fact if Jose’s wife Maria decides to do hair and nails during the lock-down in peoples homes, she even makes herself a criminal in some places. Meanwhile the big mega corporations that are allowed to stay open: like Home Depot and Lowes (not sure what life essential things they sell - albeit I did see they sell candy bars and drinks in the checkout line), McDonald’s or Walmart (that is selling like mad), the airlines (where spreading these germs would be a huge concern). In fact, the big corporations that got to stay open (because they are connected, i.e. have the ear of governors, state and federal legislatures, they have lawyers on their staff, lobbyists, etc. and can shape how the rules are written and enforced) get billions in bail out money from the federal government and the people making these rules (politicians, judges, government agencies, law enforcement) and enforcing them have secure/fixed salaries.
A long time ago, here in America we had the Salem Witch trials. Nothing really changed, we only pretend to evolve and hide behind pretend science today which tells us homosexuality is natural and is genetic (no gene found to date), global warming is real (temperatures have not risen), and the corona virus is a threat which warrants the country be shut down.
Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice, moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.

That statement, and the man who said it, was when I first came to the realization that I was, and always would be, a hardcore Conservative. That was 56 years ago!
Oh? I thought the guard was only to hand out food and medical supplies?
Experts are never held accountable when they are wrong. They just move on to the next ‘expert’ topic.
Yup. Experts.
They should be the first to dangle from lamp posts.
I’m glad you are a hardcore Conservative.
But as you should know, that man that said that?
Was not a hardcore conservative.
Actually, this Aussie understands American thinking pretty well. Most American tolerate government, they don’t worship it or revere it. We revere the principles in our founding document because those documents put citizens right above govt, which has only powers allowed it by the people.
In most countries govts tell citizens what rights they have.
Rousseau lays out that type of thinking.
We are witnessing in bas relief the tension between corporate and individual behavior. As a Christian, I honor both. At the same time, there are perverse aspects to both. This life, for Christians anyway, includes a cross, and that means it ain’t all pretty.
Before they get to use to being mini Hitlers.
“...believes the government is a nice-to-have..”
...with conditions.
“Mass civil unrest?”
We call it Civil War.
