What will restaurants look like in a post-coronavirus industry?

The restaurant industry — and those that rely on it for employment — have been hit especially hard by the coronavirus pandemic, with most eateries around the country being forced to limit service, lay off workers, or shut down altogether.

More than 8 million restaurant employees in the U.S. have been laid off or furloughed since the beginning of the outbreak, and the majority (61 percent) of restaurant operators say the government’s relief programs won’t prevent further cuts to the workforce, according to new numbers released by the National Restaurant Association on Monday.

The White House last week had laid out a framework for reopening businesses, workplaces and communities across the country, albeit in phases, and only after a strict set of criteria for health and safety is met within each state or region.

Restaurants and bars will technically be able to resume operations by the final phases, but what constitutes “operations” remains to be seen. After all, will restaurateurs and consumers embrace pre-coronavirus normals and standards, even in a post-coronavirus world?

“And there’s certainly heavier focus on sanitation, on menus, and condiments. Anything on the tables that the customers could touch, would need to be cleaned.”

Lynch added that there may be new protocols for takeout or delivery, or even purchasing the food itself. “Maybe the person taking the payment can’t be the one handling the food,” he said. “The focus will be on getting restaurants to do everything in their power to mitigate risk.”

I've always been picky about the cleanliness of restaurants. Not that I don't eat in "hole in the wall" places; they often serve the BEST food, but dirty tables and dirty menus piss me off.

I think this article might be on to something. Restaurants will have to step up their game.

Maybe restaurants in the future will wipe tables down between customers?

The same. Oh sure they’ll be some extra washing of stuff for a few months. But that’ll wear off.

What will Democrats and the media look like after we beat the hell out of them?

Joyless. And don’t linger, you are holding up their ‘station’.

Hopefully Communist Chinese-owned AMC theaters are forced to close for good and not allowed to re-open until under American ownership and management.

Communist China has no piano lessons or high school band concerts, sports or activities. This Wuhanic plague is forcing the world to be reshaped in Communist Chinese’s image

Movie theaters? People are migrating to the home viewing more than ever. Even the studios have adjusted to doing new releases straight to home video stream

So far as I can tell here, the Democrat Mayor and Governor are determined to regulate them so they can't make any money. I understand that many plan to stay closed until they can do a full reopen.

That's what happens when people who have never earned a paycheck from a private business, much less run one, take over the economy.

Yup.

Another word for "globalization" is "lowest common denominator."

Well that's three words, but you know what I mean.

Even before this closure, New York City was migrating towards a business model of take out or delivery only. We don’t have to worry about the restrictions on number of customers that they can serve in an hour they don’t have to worry about providing restrooms etc.

First of all, I think as many as half the restaurants in this country may never open again. Let’s start from there.
