Years of hard work have paid off for Columbus, Ohio teen Lashawn Samuel.

Living in poverty and struggling with hunger, Samuel had to be hospitalized at times due to health issues, and lost a friend to gang violence.

Nevertheless, the young man walked 3 miles every day from his home to a local library to study and get help with his homework.

Starting in eighth grade, Samuel began his daily walk from his home to the Columbus Metropolitan Library, where he would sign in to the Homework Help Center at 3:00 p.m., work until the center closed, and then walk back home.

Sometimes he walked home in the dark to his Section 8 housing.

Incredibly, the young man has now been accepted to 12 colleges, with several offering a full scholarship — including his dream college, Ohio State University, where he is planning on attending the Fisher College of Business.

Samuel will be the first person in his family to go to college.

Awesome. He will be a success, if he can keep that determination.

From Article: The budding scholar said:

“I never would have achieved it without God, my family, my friends and this environment I have around me.

There’s always going to be a challenge or an obstacle that you’re going to have to overcome or grow out of. But as long as you keep true to yourself and have faith and persevere so that you can overcome it, then you will.”

Good story.

“ Incredibly, the young man has now been accepted to 12 colleges “

I wouldn’t say “incredibly” sounds like the kid worked hard for it.

That’s the kind of kid who should be a household name, not the Trayvons of the world.

It’s really not fair to the kids who could have done the same thing but were afraid of ruining their Shaq-LeBron-Jordan shoes.

Poverty and the desire to escape it can be a powerful motivator, for sure. Kudos to the young man.

Yes, and depending on who you are and what colleges you apply to getting into 12 isn’t that hard. I went five for six—missed on Harvard, thank God. Best thing Harvard could have done for me. They’re too cocky and they can’t play hockey.

If I’d added Yale, Stanford, and Chicago to my application list, I’m sure my percentage would have ended up looking even worse than it did.

I’m guessing that if this guy had tried, affirmative action would have put him in a black studies program at a more “prestigious” school. I hope a full-ride at OSU ends up being a good fit.

Huh, 3 miles?

Big deal! When I was a kid back in the day I had to walk 5 miles to school and 5 miles back home, uphill both ways in snow, rain, sleet and freezing cold.

Never even got 1 offer of a scholorship.

It is incredible in light of where he came from. Most people tend to move only slightly up from their starting point. Poor people usually stay poor and middle class usually stays middle class.

It takes a lot more work to start from poverty and end up middle class than having been born into middle class and maintained it.
