Recyclable items are going straight to landfills during the coronavirus pandemic as area haulers move to protect workers at facilities where they say maintaining 6-foot social distancing is impossible.
Some of the waste processing and recycling work we do is labor-intensive, involving hundreds of employees working in sort lines handling materials, Alex Oseguera, a director of government affairs for Waste Managements California operations, wrote in a March 18 letter to the city of Newport Beach. While we have already instituted measures designed to protect our employees at these facilities both office staff as well as those involved with operations we have determined that due to current California restrictive or shelter in place orders, as well as quarantine requirements, we must cease operations temporarily at those facilities where we cannot implement appropriate safeguards.

While driving in City of Los Angeles, I noticed that recycling centers were closed...
I have one blue bag recyclable trash can and one white bag non recyclable can.
I choose the one to use randomly.
Wait a minute!
THEY CAN’T DO THAT!!!
I’m telling!
Lol
My friend who was a garbage man in the 90s and even up to about 2010 said they were bringing all of the cans and pails to the same place.
I’ve heard that also. From what I read the mixed recycling from household use is often not worth it to sort. They will happily take say, cardboard waste form a retail or office building as that is usually segregated to a separate cardboard only dumpster.
I believe it
This Italian flu may be the end of recycling.... BTW - I’m calling it the Italian flu from now on. The Spanish flu started at pig farms in the United States and it exploded in a big way in Spain, so why not call this one The Italian flu? That’s where it exploded, so that’s what we should call it...
That or ‘God’s gift to the mafia’.
Recycling has been a hoax for a long time. Most materials there is little to no market and China was accepting a lot but they quit about 8 months ago. This is just another lefty fantasy like global warming.
also recycling stops when energy prices are high because it doesn’t pay to haul.
It is all a scam to manipulate and control people.
Reality is, even during best of time most plastics are buried and not recycled...
We have trash to energy burners here
A left feel good policy, they throw it all together, they really think there are little elves sorting all this stuff out?
They’ve been doing that for 20 years now.
It is another conformity exercise by the Democrats. The left is just training the country for the next Holocaust.
Though I don’t know the exact numbers, the law of physics means recycling has to be a scam. Imagine a 90 lb bin of rain-soaked newspaper, cardboard, and glossy ads picked up in door-to-door stops by a 40 ton truck delivered to a processing site 15 miles away. The only product capable of compensating for the fuel and labor cost must be a metal or rare earth (I’m exaggerating a little). Think of the BTUs needed to dry cellulose assuming the garbage put roadside is even a reusable paper product?
Sure, some items might generate a net balance if recycled efficiently and conscientiously. But the only way most fake greenies will comply is curbside pickup, the most inefficient of all.
Decades before global warming the criminal lefties saw recycling as the way to generate bullshit work, taxes, and forced compliance over a population.
I don't think it was any worse in Spain. It's just that Spain was neutral in WW I so didn't have wartime censorship.
Also I saw on some TV show that figured the Spanish flu was actually from China, came to Britain and France through hired workers and then around the world.
The city supply’s us with a big blue recycling can and a big green trash one. They recycling one has never been used for recycling.
Actually it’s full of leaves right now waiting for pickup.
Recycling is economically unsustainable and is a complete waste of time and resources.
Wealth is created only when the value that labor produces is worth more than the cost of the labor. This is true whether the labor is from a wandering prospector digging gold from a secret mine shaft, a dirt farmer in Myanmar delicately planting a rice sprout in his 1/4 acre field, or from a team or rocket-scientists launching a communications satellite. When more wealth is produced than is consumed a society prospers. When the opposite is true, the society starves.
Recycling garbage consumes more labor than the wealth it produces. It leads in the direction of starvation, not prosperity. It is good that it is being reduced.
The “six feet” order is not necessary. Proper masks and gloves for the recycle workers would be enough. Doctors and nurses do not work six feet apart every minute of their work, and they are masked and gloved. If it’s good enough for hospitals it is good enough for other workers. A universal “Six feet” requirement with no context to it at all is NOT relevant to the knowledge of Wuhan virus infection.
Actually there are folks sorting it out. Some plastic is economically viable to rescycle.. milk cartons, laundry detergent containers etc. but most plastics are not economically ciable to recycle the process to recycle them is too complex of the the cost too high.
Most single use plastic will never be recycled, the cost of using new material is so cheap and the efficiencies in the manufacturing process make most single use plastics unprrofitable.. it would cost more to use recycled materials than a new.
So the next time you throw your soda bottle or water bottle or margarine tub into the recycling bin, realize its most likely going to wind up buried in a landfill or burned, if it doesnt wind up shipped to some third world country where it will just wind up dumped in a remote area or into a lake or river.
Plastic recycling is largely a scam. If you actually look at the numbers your recycling pickup wants, and only put those in your recycling bin youll be surprised how little is truly recycled. But like most people we dont look at the numbers just toss it in the recycling bin and assume it will be recycled.
