Hank never made it to 30. It is a mystery just what he could have done if he lived to an old age.

Now look here, Joe, quit acting smart.
Stop being that old brazen sort.
Don't you sell this country short;
No, no, Joe.
Just because you think you've found
A system that we know ain't sound,
Don't you keep throwing your weight around.
No, No, Joe.
No, No, Joe--Luke the Drifter (1950)

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
RICHARD RODGERS
FLOWER DRUM SONG
Richard and Oscar had suffered back-to-back flops in the mid-1950s with Me and Juliet and Pipe Dream. While Oklahoma! had broken new ground in 1943, any project in the late 1950s would have to compete with modern musicals. West Side Story had changed the rules. The guys had always begun work on their next musical as soon as the last one opened, but by the start of 1957, six months after Pipe Dream had bombed, they had no new show in development.
Richard was recovering from an operation for jaw cancer, was drinking heavily and was suffering from depression. In June 1957, he checked into the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic, where he remained for twelve weeks. But this did not stop his drinking. Nothing did.
Oscar was in Los Angeles filming South Pacific. While having lunch, he met longtime friend and agent Joe Fields, who mentioned that he was negotiating for the rights to The Flower Drum Song. Intrigued by the title, Oscar asked for a copy of the novel and decided that it had potential as a musical. He consulted with Richard, and they agreed to make it their next project.
The musical retained the books central theme, an idea running through much of 20th Century American literature: the conflict between Old World immigrants and their assimilated children. Oscar shifted the focus of the story from the father, who was central to the novel, to his son. He also removed the darker elements of the work, added the festive nightclub subplot and emphasized the romantic elements.
Though the story was less adventurous than their earlier hits, it was innovative, even daring in its treatment of Asian-Americans, an ethnic group that had long been caricatured in mainstream pop culture.
I ENJOY BEING A GIRL
This clip from the 1961 film version is one of the most famous in the entire history of movies. Even in a darkened theater, I could sense the faces of a gaggle of nuns turning bright red when they saw Nancy parade around in her undies.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
RICHARD RODGERS
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
After viewing The Trapp Family, a 1956 West German film, stage director Vincent Donahue thought that the project would be perfect for his friend Mary Martin. Broadway producers Leland Hayward and Richard Halliday, who was Marys husband, agreed. The producers originally envisioned a non-musical that would be written by the team of Lindsay and Crouse that would feature songs from the repertoire of the Trapp Family Singers. Then they decided to add an original song or two, perhaps by Rodgers and Hammerstein. But it was soon agreed that the project should be a musical rather than a play. Little did Richard and Oscar know that this would be their swan song.

April 11Feed My Sheep
Jesus said, Take care of my sheep.
John 21:16In a lecture in 1911, Oswald Chambers reflected on being a young shepherd in the highlands of Scotland: When you have to carry across your shoulders a dirty old [goat] and bring it down the mountain-side, you will soon know whether shepherding is poetry or not. He didnt want to romanticize this form of labor as poetry but rather called it the most taxing, the most exhausting, and the most exasperating work. The hard work of shepherding people is what Jesus entrusted to Peter, for Peter would face criticism, misunderstanding, and other challenges in caring for His flock.
Chambers reflected, To whom did He say, Feed My lambs? To Peter. Who was Peter? A very wayward sheep. Even though Peter had denied knowing Jesus (see John 18:1527), Jesus met him on the beach and lovingly restored him in front of the other disciples (21:1519). Peters bitter experience taught him how to be tender and watchful over the Lords sheep. Having received the Holy Spirit, he was ready for the toil and joys of being a shepherd to people.
Like Peter, we may have failed Jesus through denials, wrongdoing, selfishness, or pride. But He seeks us out and forgives us, just as He did Peter. Watch Meno Kalishers, Daniel Kalishers, and Debby Nalbandians devotional video, Jesus, the Mission, and learn more about Gods forgiveness and restoration. He restores us and gives us a new commissionhelping us care for others. As we follow Jesus, we share our love for Him with those we meet.
