Dated Jan. 29, it came during a period when Mr. Trump was playing down the risks to the United States, and he would later go on to say that no one could have predicted such a devastating outcome.
Mr. Navarro said in the memo that the administration faced a choice about how aggressive to be in containing an outbreak, saying the human and economic costs would be relatively low if it turned out to be a problem along the lines of a seasonal flu.
But he went on to emphasize that the risk of a worst-case pandemic scenario should not be overlooked given the information coming from China
The memo was dated the same day that Mr. Trump named a White House task force to deal with the threat, and as the administration was weighing whether to bar some travelers from China, an option being pushed by Mr. Navarro
Mr. Trump would approve the limits on travel from China the next day, though it would be weeks before he began taking more aggressive steps to head off spread of the virus.
Questions about Mr. Trumps handling of the crisis, especially in its early days when he suggested it was being used by Democrats to undercut his re-election prospects, are likely to define his presidency. Mr. Navarros memo is evidence that some in the upper ranks of the administration had at least considered the possibility of the outbreak turning into something far more serious than Mr. Trump was acknowledging publicly at the time.

next the slimes will say a psychic warned the building too...
Maggie is a numbskull.
Navarro himself slammed this idea face first into the concrete in a recent WH briefing. I think it was either Sat. or Sun.
“Dated Jan. 29, it came during a period when Mr. Trump was playing down the risks to the United States”
Apparently Trump did not downplay the risks that much or he wouldn’t have restricted flights from China TWO days later.
The Slimes, at it again, the Fakest of the Fake News haters.
I hope every scumbag who works for The Slimes catches the corona virus and dies a horrible death. Thats what they deserve.
On the same day of the travel ban? NYT knows no shame!
they can try and hang this on Trump all they want..but that video of their god Fauci saying the U.S. has nothing to worry about on Jan 21 blows up their lil narrative...hes the so called expert, and he blew it.....
Hers we can see the liberal narrative, that Trump downplayed the threat, and his actions taken were too little too late. This narrative is out there and will be part of the Democrat playbook in this election campaign. They will push the false claim, in my opinion, that if we elect good Democrats to high office, then we will.be safe from health threats such as this virus. They will push the false notion that good democrats such as joe Biden would have taken the bull by thr horns and stopped this virus outbreak.
Who said there’s a shortage of toilet paper?
I read this article through twice and actually don’t find anything wrong with it. It is factual and avoids hyperbole and hysteria. It really doesn’t cast blame.
The author wrote “Mr. Navarro said in the memo that the administration faced a choice about how aggressive to be in containing an outbreak, saying the human and economic costs would be relatively low if it turned out to be a problem along the lines of a seasonal flu. But he went on to emphasize that the risk of a worst-case pandemic scenario should not be overlooked given the information coming from China.”
So it sounds like a typical fence straddling memo — “it might not be bad or it could be bad.”
It actually seems to praise Navarro for sounding the early alarm: “Both Mr. Navarro and Matthew Pottinger, the chief deputy at the National Security Council, were among the few officials urging colleagues in January to take a harder line in relation to the growing threat of the coronavirus. But their warnings were seen by other officials as primarily reflecting their concerns about Chinas behavior and their concerns look more prescient in hindsight than they actually were, other officials argue.”
This article is not out of the usual NYT, WaPo, or CNN “Get Trump” mold.
From many accounts, January 29th was two months too late to have the US notified. That said, if Trump had been told after Thanksgiving that a deadly virus very likely was on US soil, the what? Shut down the country heading into December and Christmas?
Imagine Trump doing this in December while the Dem. Impeachment Party was going on!!!
Fauci doesn't want people to worry about coronavirus, the danger of which is "just minuscule." But he does want them to take precautions against the "influenza outbreak, which is having its second wave."
"We have more kids dying of flu this year at this time than in the last decade or more," he said. "At the same time people are worrying about going to a Chinese restaurant. The threat is (we have) a pretty bad influenza season, particularly dangerous for our children."
Fauci offered advice for people who want to protect against the "real and present danger" of seasonal flu, which also would protect against the hypothetical danger of coronavirus.
"Wash your hands as frequently as you can. Stay away from crowded places where people are coughing and sneezing. If in fact you are coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth," he says.
"You know, all the things that we say each year."https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2020/02/17/nih-disease-official-anthony-fauci-risk-of-coronavirus-in-u-s-is-minuscule-skip-mask-and-wash-hands/4787209002/
"You don't need to do anything different today than you did yesterday," Fauci said, "but the thing we need to do is to be understanding what we would have to do if we did see communities spread here."
He added, "That's what we call mitigation. Nothing has changed except outside, the outside world, the other countries are getting into more difficulty which may actually ultimately impact us." Fauci praised U.S. health officials for properly containing the virus thus far, and reiterated his call for the public to continue to "do the things you always do" when preventing other viruses, such as the flu. “If you look at what has been done thus far in this country, it is correct that it has been contained very successfully," Fauci said. "We have not had communities spread from person-to-person -- that is good news.
"It might change, so ... right now it is under control but that doesn't mean you can let your guard down and think that it's nothing to be concerned about."https://www.foxnews.com/media/dr-anthony-fauci-coronavirus-vaccine-be-prepared
Fauci credits “good public health measures” in the United States for helping to stop “sustained transmission” of the virus in America.
“As the entry into the United States of potentially infected people is diminished because of the travel restrictions on both sides ... I think you are going to see a dampening down” of U.S. cases, he added.https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/03/nih-dr-anthony-fauci-25percent-of-china-coronavirus-cases-very-serious.html
So Much for Experts...<
Have people awakened to the fact that the New York Times and other media are under the control and direction of China?
Fauci, himself, was downplaying through February.
NYT is utter toilet paper material.
But the NY Times was downplaying it at the same time.
It’s tough to figure out who is more deranged.
Schiff or the staff at the NYT or the WP.
The article doesn’t even make any sense. He appointed a task force the same day, stopped travel from China the next day. Then they claim he wasn’t taking it seriously.
