On Saturday’s “CNN Newsroom,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson and USS Theodore Roosevelt Commanding Officer Captain Brett Crozier are examples of people the Trump administration fired for speaking the truth.
Schumer said, “There’s all too familiar a pattern in this administration, when you tell the president the truth, you get fired. This guy was a patriot. This guy stood for — our intelligence agencies have done such a wonderful job. … And by politicizing it, dismantling it, not wanting to hear the truth, that’s — since World War II, we have built up this fine, fine agency. And the president is undermining it. When you speak truth to power in this country, Fredricka, when you speak truth to power, you should be a hero. But in this administration, when you speak truth to power, all too often, you get fired. Ask the captain of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, ask Col. Vindman, ask other people.”

The truth hasn’t come out of Schumer’s mouth in so long that he doesn’t know it when he hears it.
He absolutely doesn’t have what it takes to command a war ship!! PERIOD!!!
So “speaking truth to power” is the new way of saying “leaking secrets to the press?”
Not that Schumer would know anything about the military, but I’m reminded of the saying:
“The military exists to preserve democracy, not practice it.”
It is interesting to see the breakdown in reactions between those here who have served as Naval Officers and those who may or may not have other military experience.

Many self-identify. Other use language or relates knowledge that could only come from active naval service as an officer.
You have no business “speaking truth to power” as a member of the U.S. Military. None.
Frightening a Senator does not know this.
Nothing says “Brainless Leftist Ideologue” faster and more effectively than the phrase “Speaking truth to power”.
From our Cold War days, it is the equivalent of “Imperialist Capitalist Running Dog”.

“Who put the crew ashore in a foreign country amid the pandemic?”
Here’s the thing; port calls are made at the Pentagon level with the consideration of 1). logistically arranged resupplying of the ship. 2). showing the flag. 3) Rest and Recreation for the crew and 4). diplomatic considerations, especially when trying to make trade deals and fostering alliances.
Cancelling a port call is a major decision made by the State Dept., the Pentagon and, if necessary, the President. With that said, the Commanding Officer can, and do, cancel a port call if he deems that the port call will endanger his ship or crew.
For example, the DDG I was on was scheduled to do a port call in Mombassa, Kenya. The port was such that we were to be at anchor and would take liberty boats to shore. While the tugs were tying up to get us to the anchorage two of the three tugs were not using bumbers, (rubber tires attached to the side of the tug), to protect our hull from damage and one had the line fray and snap almost immediately after putting a stress on it. The C.O. refused to allow the tugs to continue and ordered them to depart. Our ship turned around and put back out to sea. The C.O. made a decision based on the conditions of the tugs and the professionalism of their captains. I’m sure he caught flack from the Commodore but his decision was not over ruled because he was the one who had the responsibility to protect the ship and crew from harm.
Could the C.O. of the aircraft carrier have cancelled the port call? Possibly, but he would have needed to consult his chain of command since the port call was planned and there was no physical threat to the ship. As for the threat to the crew from the Wulan virus, that may have required cancelling liberty call if the threat was dire at the time. But, that would have been done in consultation with the Pentagon and State Dept. as to the potential for infection based on the medical knowledge at the time concerning the virus.
I would put the blame for the virus infection of the crew on the upper chain of command and State, not the C.O.

The Navy is so concerned with ensuring the health of it’s crew that before deploying on a cruise all of the crew gets a dental exam to ensure that dental issues are dealt with in the states. Medical records are reviewed and the Medical Officer and the C.O. will discuss each sailor that may need to be left behind because of a medical condition.
Plans are discussed frequently concerning handling medical issues while deployed, including infectious diseases and how to quarantine the sick sailors if required.
Plans for medical evacuation are discussed with the C.O. and there are protocols for handling that at the fleet command level.
Depending on where the ship is expected to be operating, Hydrocoloquin is stock piled and a schedule for giving the crew doses of the drug are made for when it is appropriate to administer. Every crew members vaccinations are updated before deployment.
In other words, crew health is a priority because with a sick crew the ship is not ready and able to fight if required.
While there may be plenty of blame to go around, the CO is not without his share. Does he not have some responsibility for the health and safety of the people under his command?
