Panama City (AFP) - Panama has implemented gender-based social distancing regulations to help tackle the coronavirus crisis, but the move has raised "dread" among members of the transgender community.
Already under a near total lockdown, Panamanian authorities decreed this week that men could only leave home to go shopping on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with women allowed to do so on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
No one is allowed out on Sundays.
Before that, Panama had already closed its borders, suspended school classes, banned foreigners from entering the country and imposed a lockdown that left open a two-hour window allowing people to leave their homes to purchase essential items.
But the new measure, which came into effect on Wednesday, has left transgender people worried they will be the targets of discrimination.
Ali, a 25-year-old illustrator who works as a tattoo artist is a transgender man, but his identity card states he's a woman.
"My biggest fear, obviously, is the police, who aren't trained or sensitized to this subject and I don't know what attitude they will take with me," he told AFP.
"I'm 100 percent sure I'll be stopped in the street and seeing as I don't fit the mold ... I don't know if they'll be aggressive. That's what scares me," added Ali.
The Association of New Men and Women of Panama, which defends LGBT+ rights in the Central American country, said the measures had caused "dread."
"There are still police patrols who use the argument that God only created Adam and Eve," association president Ricardo Beteta told AFP. "What does a transgender person do in this situation?"

I can see why the French would find this news deeply troubling.

That stuff does not play at all well in Latino culture.
“There are still police patrols who use the argument that God only created Adam and Eve,” association president Ricardo Beteta told AFP. “What does a transgender person do in this situation?”
As Rush Limbaugh says, “You can’t make this stuff up.”
But more men and women have been killed by the virus than all other genders combined.
The Tattoo tranny is safe.
Does this mean the transgenders can shop any day Monday through Saturday?!
Was there a Virus Gender Rule Book?
Who knew?
First world problems in a third world country....Who Da Thunk it? It seems the real problem is who’s “passable” at being what they’re not.
Hey, you were the ones that changed the rules, so why don’t you start living by them?
Has SHE had HER addadicktome* operation?
*Add-a-dick-to-me. Male queers who wanna be girls get a chopitoffame (Chop-it-off-a-me)
Do they ever swap out parts for transplants?
“Follow the science”
XX and XY.
“a transgender man”
I still struggle with what this means - a woman who wants to be a man, or a man who wants to be a woman.
No wonder they’re confused.
If nobody can tell then there is no problem, otherwise as Paul McCartney said, 'Get back, Loretta."
Why worry? They can go out every day. Today you’re a man, tomorrow you’re dressed as a woman, the next day you’re a man again. Heck, they have it made.
I live in Panama and can tell you these guidelines are real. My neighbor is 82 years old with short-term memory issues so I took a family calendar and drew on it to show him when he could go into town. I told him he’d have to wear a skirt on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays if he went into town.
My landlord and I joked about transgenders and I suggested there would be a spike in people claiming to be trannies in the following weeks just to get out of the house.
As for this “fellow”, I can tell you tattoo artists are considered “non-essential” (except maybe in California). My advice to him/her/it would be to get a friend to do his/her/it’s shopping and don’t leave the house. I’m guessing a lot of the cops here aren’t going to be happy with them.
BY the way, when I first arrived in Panama City, I was warned there were prostitutes about, mostly from Columbia and Venezuela escaping poverty, and that some of the female hookers were actually men. Can’t say I would be tempted anyway but having to ask a woman in Spanish if she had a penis would be a total deal-breaker for me.
So a "trans-gender man" is actually a girl.
A "trans-gender woman" is a boy.
If they had only read the fine print, before the procedure.

Buh-bye.
