The U.S. economy lost a total of 701,000 jobs in March, bringing a record 10-year streak of employment gains to a halt as the coronavirus pandemic continues to hammer the workforce and shatter economic growth.

The closely watched monthly jobs data, released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, also shows the unemployment rate soared to 4.4 percentfrom 3.5 percent, after months at a half-century low.

You really can’t be that stupid. Otherwise, you couldn’t even remember to breathe.

Many of these jobs will never be back. Ever.

I don’t disagree that there could be an element of truth to your comments re: #2.

But what that ignores is the fact that people ARE getting sick. And many hospitals ARE overwhelmed. I know several doctors and nurses and they have told me that it’s bad - truly bad. They are short on all the things you hear about in the media and it’s not hyperbole. They have no reason to lie.

If we do the best of social distancing, (and we’re not) a quarter of a million people may die. If we didn’t do anything, I think it’s pretty clear that millions may have died. Trump never - EVER - would have won with that hanging around his neck even if the economy powered on.

Good discussion. And hey, I’m still not convinced this wasn’t a Chinese accident. OR... more craven, a deliberate release to 1) kill their elderly population and 2) suppress the Hong Kong unrest. (except it went off the rails)

The Tom Clancy view is that they did for the above PLUS, to get vengeance on Trump for the trade war. I think this is less likely because they have screwed their own economy - and reputation - in the same breath.

Shutting down the economy is highly counterproductive. Society didn’t cease to function in 1918 during the Spanish Flu, during the Black Plague epidemics, nor any other diseases that have inflicted mankind since the cave men. Venal, power hunger people saw an opportunity to create a mass panic, and took advantage.

LOL

No, I’m afraid pot calling the kettle black is sillier.

You chicken-littles fomenting nonstop panic are the ones who NEED their heads in the sand (so we don’t have to listen anymore).

And I NEVER said Trump was “universally” popular.

Societies had no idea what effective actions to take during the Spanish Flu and Black Plague (and an estimated 100-300 million people died as a result), but it wasn’t a conscious decision - it was due to ignorance. Would have they have crippled their economies if they thought they could significantly reduce the number of deaths? I don’t claim to know, but I’d be surprised if they wouldn’t have given it serious consideration.

But they didn’t, according to history. Life went on as best it could. The fact that we are all here today is proof.

I needn’t point out that you failed to answer the question.

He’s got the approval of probably 45-46% of Americans. The great majority of those are his steadfast base who will vote for him no matter what.

To win re-election, he likely needs to get that number to about 51% and he can do that by swinging a few independents and if they’re the right ones he’ll take the EC.

He’d never win a popular vote election. And before you wet yourself, I’m not suggesting we should have one or that he’s not POTUS because he didn’t win a plurality of the vote.

I’m simply supporting my original assertion that he’s not popular with the majority of people in the country.

They didn’t consider actions like social distancing (with the resultant impact on their economy) because they had no knowledge of the science of contagious diseases. We could do nothing in response to virtually any threat and people will still be here in 500 years.

Alls I am trying to say is that we need to stop acting like little b*****s and toughen up, work with Trump till the end of April and see where we at.

Nobody is blaming Trump for the economic situation because people have enough sense to realize it was out of his control.

6.6 million first time unemployment applications this last week. 3.3 million last week.

The USA is going to be dead in a month

That is because the number is from mid month. They do their survey beginning the first week of the month and wrap it up by the end of the second week so everything can be compiled by the end of the month. It will probably be as much as 20% next month.
