That is an incredibly shallow view of Rush's show today. It was brilliant, if you are willing to think. As usual, Rush was correct and he did not say what you claim he said.

It's obvious you think he was criticizing Trump, but he wasn't.

Rush was not close to being this blunt, but you do understand the longer the economy is shut down, the greater the chance of an economic calamity? If you don't get that connection, you won't understand much else.

Our own government is estimating 40 to 50 million people will be unemployed. That is roughly an unemployment rate of 25% to 33%. Most economists are estimating a second quarter GDP loss of up to -35%. Those are more than depression level stats.

There is a very good chance of being in a depression if the economy doesn't crank up soon.

What Rush said is that you have to balance the virus with the economy. Jim DeMint said last night he is expecting bread lines in 2 months if the economy doesn't open up soon.

So my thought is for you to listen again to the first hour of Rush's show - it's always on YouTube, but listen carefully this time. Also, Rush pointed out as to how the press now is trying to express the thought those models may be incorrect as to the virus' toll and blaming the White House and how they are doing that is quite interesting.

I understand what you mean, but unemployed is unemployed. These are not people just working from home...these are people with no jobs. This country is being destroyed. You can’t shut the country down and not expect major and massive economic issues and yes, Trump will be blamed and the press will make sure of it.

Just as anecdotal evidence....my company is considered “essential”. But we just decided to furlough all workers for 2 weeks at the end of April to save cash.

We may extend it, but everyone gets a 2 week furlough and will go on unemployment.

What we just saw in the jobs report is nothing to what is coming.

Those numbers are as of today. We are heading down an economic cliff, a steep one. If you are unemployed on election day, 90% of those unemployed will not vote for Trump, no matter how well they think Trump handled the crisis.

Not only that, their neighbor, spouse, child, parent, sibling, etc won't vote for Trump either.

While he didn't use these exact words, Rush talked about balancing the response to virus with the economy. You can't shut down the country without major ramifications. As Trump has tweeted and talked about the cure can't be worse than the disease, but that is what we are getting. A cure far worse than the disease.

Fester - you seem to be very unaware of what is happening. The press is already using the word depression and that is the first time they will be accurate. Listen to the first hour of Rush today. You have to balance the response to the virus and the economy.

What Rush said is that you have to balance the virus with the economy.

So, in other words, he places the economy above people’s lives.

Did NBC provide any context, like thanks to Trump enacting a lock down we have saved lives, but at the cost of jobs? The same media that pushed us into the lock down are reporting job losses like they are unrelated.

That is probably true. I’d say with 90% confidence. It’s just too convenient.

To be sure, there is much I am unaware of. Causes and effects rarely fall within my domain on a global scale. That said, I question how it happens that a pause on how we interact, even for a month or two, necessitates a complete loss of all these jobs.

“i stayed away from the TV this morning but in all honesty I thought the number would be worse..”

It is worse. This number is lagging behind.

The number of first time claims for March was 10 million. That’s how many people lost their jobs.

I'll tell you what. When all is said and done, look at the number of suicides due to economic ruin and social isolation. This is going to cost tens of Trillions in the end. If interest rates go to their historic, long term rate of 5%, that would be $500 billion every single year in interest alone on an added $10 trillion in debt. That $500 billion will probably go to the Chinese since they would likely be the only ones who could absorb it. When you issue a lot of debt, more than they are willing to take under current conditions, the only way to make people interested is to offer a higher interest rate

If the government can't issue that amount of debt but it is needed to keep people from starving and companies from collapsing, then people will starve and companies will collapse. Keep in mind that that money they are raising will have to chase vastly fewer goods, because there are so few people producing them. That is the recipe for hyper-inflation.

This is going to be the largest man made economic disaster in history. In terms of wealth destroyed, I don't think there could have been anything close to it. Maybe the Mongol conquests in the late 1200s and the 100 years that between the dying days of the Roman Empire through the Justinianic plague. Keep in mind those were subsistence agriculture economies where you could pick up where you left off by throwing some seeds on the ground. If this goes on too long, the vast array of logistics relationships and public and private organizations that make up the economy maybe enormously damaged.
