The U.S. economy lost a total of 701,000 jobs in March, bringing a record 10-year streak of employment gains to a halt as the coronavirus pandemic continues to hammer the workforce and shatter economic growth.
The closely watched monthly jobs data, released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, also shows the unemployment rate soared to 4.4 percentfrom 3.5 percent, after months at a half-century low.

Question: if a small business receives relief money and keeps employees on the payroll, will those employees be removed from the unemployment numbers reported next time??
And it will pass like everything does. I don’t know one problem that is ever been solved by crying or panicking or worrying
Agreed. One could argue that we’re being polite while and because we are so dependent on them.
But I’d like to see Trump turbocharge our complete independence.
From 3.9 to 4.4. That ain’t too bad.
That report, of course, is a few weeks old and does not reflect lost jobs through 3-31. No way, since 10 million unemployment applications have been filed in March.
See pose 25.
It remains to be seen how long the suspensions/layoffs will last. It is not as if all these job disappeared. Besides, more may be needed as we ramp up USA production of medical gear, etc.
I figured it would be many millions.
THere are. The NC Employment Commission can’t even begin to process the 700,000 here in this state alone.
Some of the small businesses that employed these people will never come back.
If you pay me 600 a week extra for four months with no reporting or job hunting strings, I think I’d take 4 months off work.
Just sayin’
There’s a big incentive to stay out of work for at least 4 months, with no job hunting or reporting strings.
You ain’t seen nothing yet. This is a lagging indicator.
Steinmart, a regional department store chain, has furloughed 8,600. Its stock is currently selling for 44 cents and those jobs are almost certainly gone forever.
701,000 unemployed in March, but the last two weeks 10 million people claimed unemployment. Interesting.
I understand that it can be higher for April but I guess my point is, that it seems pointless to use these economic measures in the same old way. What do you expect employment numbers to look like when so many people are ordered to stay home. Its like closing schools for a week for a blizzard and taking attendance and freaking out at the low attendance.
“...Do you believe this was a deliberate Chinese plot?...”
Absolutely. It stopped the rebellion in Hong Kong for them, thinned their herd pretty good, and attacked their biggest enemy, the USA and Trump....BUT....they were probably NOT alone in it. It’s very likely the ongoing DS shadow government, along with key communist domestic RATs, were in collusion with the whole thing. Odongo/Brennan/DNC and their filthy ilk all come to mind.
IF this can be proven, they need to be publicly hanged for treason.
And if they don’t go back to work for the company they used to work for they won’t have that job anymore. They will be permanently unemployed.
“...Is that how Trump responds to an unprovoked military biological warfare attack on helpless US citizens right here in the US?...”
Right now it is, since we’re dependent on them in so many ways. The immediate alternative is an outright nuclear war. I suspect the POTUS has a plan on dealing with those evil SOBs eventually without nuking everyone in the world into oblivion.
Right now, it’s probably “keep your friends close, and your enemies closer”. We’ll eventually see what happens IF any of this is true.
