Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, issued a statewide stay-at-home order on Wednesday afternoon to curb the rate of infection in his state during the global coronavirus pandemic.
The order will go into effect at midnight Thursday and last for at least 30 days.
“It makes sense to make this move now,” the governor said during a press conference Wednesday, adding that he was taking the action after President Trump extended the social distancing guidelines nationwide for another 30 days.
DeSantis, who balked for weeks at issuing such an order, also changed his mind less than a day after receiving a letter from 13 Democratic members of Congress urging him to “immediately issue a statewide stay-at-home order to save lives.”
“This pandemic has not respected global borders so it certainly will not respect county borders,” the letter said. “We cannot wait, we cannot leave this decision to county or municipal governments.”
At least 33 states including California, New York, and Illinois, which are all home to some of the most densely populated major U.S. cities, have issued stay-at-home orders. Florida is the third most-populated state in the country, with about 21.6 million residents.
On Monday, DeSantis issued a “safer at home” order for four counties in South Florida, currently the hotspot of the outbreak in the state. Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties were ordered to stay at home until at least April 15th.
During a White House press briefing Tuesday, President Trump said he planned to call DeSantis to urge him to allow two Holland America cruise ships – the MS Zaandam and MS Rotterdam – to dock in the state. At least four people have died and more than 200 others have fallen ill with COVID-19 on one of the ships by Tuesday.

30 days!! It’s insanity.
Now Ron DeSantis needs to tell the two ships that the coast guard will take the 300 Americans off the ships and then these ships can sail to Europe or where-ever and let the other passengers off there.
And the 50 people (total on the two ships) that are from Florida can stay in Florida...the other 250 Americans can self isolate then go home. And the foreigners? NOT OUR PROBLEM.
Whatever the list says, there’s enough things left out and that will affect Florida’s economy
Don’t confuse people with logic and reasoning.
They are considered essential and are contractors (here in Broward).
Yeah, I know. But there are more essential services listed than I anticipated. Still it will hit too many people very hard.
Don’t downplay the impact on Florida’s economy. Restricting tourism is a big hit to our economy.
Essential businesses and workers are unaffected.
Especially during high spring season. Our small restaurants are down 60% and they feel fortunate as many are down to zero and will never reopen.
There is almost no stress more corrosive than financial stress. Divorces to follow. then broken families, then traumatized kids. Then more crime. I fervently hope that those who have driven this panic, shrieking like demons to gain control over the rest of us in order to manipulate the vote in November by collapsing our economy will at last be called to final account for their ongoing treason.
What is essential? Not listed in the order.

My bigger concern: there are very rich, very powerful people who are taking copious notes. All it takes is a lot of money, a compliant media, and a global panic to suspend the rights of man and take over governments. We are very fortunate to be under a somewhat Federalist government right now. Pray for us that come November the scars from this remain fresh and people vote freedom. At this point I fear that won’t be the case. I pray I’m wrong.
