Dr. Deborah Birx on Tuesday said that medical experts failed to understand the seriousness of the coronavirus because of incomplete data coming out of China.
I think the medical community interpreted the Chinese data as that this was serious but smaller than anyone expected, she said. Because I think probably we were missing a significant amount of the data.
Birx spoke about the experts relationship with the data during a White House press briefing on Tuesday evening.
She acknowledged frankly that when she saw early data from China reporting only 50,000 cases of the virus among the 20 million people in Wuhan, China, and the 80 million in Hubei province, she felt that the threat was similar to that of SARS, which had 8,098 cases globally and 774 deaths.
The devastation hitting countries like Italy and Spain and South Korea gave the experts much more complete data, helping them draw models that were far more alarming.
Lets see if we can do much better than that, President Donald Trump said during the briefing, pointing to the models predicting 100,000 to 240,000 deaths in the United States.
Trump noted that the virus was also more contagious than expected.
I think the one thing that nobody really knew about this virus was how contagious it was, he said. Its so incredibly contagious, and nobody knew that.

well, i wonder then— is this not part of the answer to Acosta’s slightly snarky question at this evening’s daily covid-19 briefing?
Many heads need to roll.
She must be. She seems to have her own strategic national stockpile of scarves.
If you trust the devil is telling you the truth, you are the idiot.
Dr. Deborah Birx is the real deal. I am not a fan of Dr tony.
Agreed. Has the CIA analytical half EVER been right about anything?
By that point, I'd already been quite aware of the issue and already rounding out family supplies.
And China has done NOTHING, then or since, to correct any of this!
There is every reason to think that this virus was in that biolab in Wuhan, and China has done absolutely nothing that would disuade that thinking.
We should be on a war footing in terms of national resources and information sharing with China.
Hong Kong, atrocities on Christians and this bio weapon should convince anyone that the Panda is rabid.
The WHO has to be held accountable. That China doesnt tell the truth is not a surprise.
Are we starting to gather and study the complete data now — things like transmissibility in comparison to other viruses, effect of pre-existing conditions, and ability to relapse? Some Freepers seem to be interested only in how many Chinese really died, or imagining how we are going to pay them back for their secrecy.
Deep state might have very well coordinated with the Chinese. Not to kill hundreds of thousands but just a little virus to create a downturn in the economy, maybe a touch of their dream recession, a few sick enough to affect the unemployment numbers. The Chinese Operatives underestimated the deadly power of COVID 19.
Thank goodness our government isn't accountable for our response.
The WHO is an extension of the Chinese government.
HOWEVER... political correctness prevented the CDC from seeing one crucial fact that would/should have made them wake up much, much sooner. If the CCP was admitting to it being x bad, you can be sure it was really at least x times 10 as bad. They failed to follow the basic rule: Don't listen to what I say. Watch what I do. When the CCP quarantines 500,000,000 people, builds hospitals in 2 weeks, completely shuts down their economy for months, that should have told them something that they didn't need accurate numbers to understand.
Someone has been editing the CDC web site big time. The number of search hits for “climate change” and “transgender” are dramatically reduced from just a few days ago. Someone is covering their tracks.
That's the truth. How much so is here in Carl Benjamin's (AKA Sargon of Akkad) case. It's pretty damning.
Because our post Obama intel agencies are pretty much worthless?
Chicoms lie about everything
Giving them the benefit of what little doubt there is about the true origin of the virus (wet market vs. biolab), their irresponsibility has cost our nation several trillions of dollars. I suggest we get a bit of that back by simply declaring that any money owed by any American citizen or resident to a Chinese national or Chinese company is null and void.
