I must remember when I go out for a walk to leave my cell phone at home.

We are in a rural community and the nearest pharmacy and grocery store is 7 miles away. In NYC, those would be down the block. I prefer the 7 mile drive.

There methodology for scoring does not adequately take into consideration either population density nor the landmass of an area (a county) together with the population density.

As the business and residential environment is dense, as in San Francisco, you do not need to be very “mobile” to get “essentials” done. But as population density decreases, there is already a higher level of “social distancing” in place, AND one is required to be more “mobile” than in San Francisco to get daily “essentials” done.

However, it is additionally true that in the areas that the others try to paint as not doing enough social distancing (by their method’s counting) many of those counties also have lower levels of active Covid-19 cases (less “social distancing” or not).

Many rural locations do not have wireless signal. Mine doesn’t. Or GPS. But for those who have land-lines they can of course call.

The state of California received an "A" grade overall thanks to a 40 percent decline in average distanced traveled, but several counties - all in rural areas with few reported cases - have actually logged an increase in distance traveled since the shelter-in-place order was issued.

Based on "distance traveled," this whole thing is flawed and skewed against people in the rural areas. Hmmm. I wonder why.

If 700,000 people in San Francisco country travel to the supermarket, a distance of, say 100 yards, they have a much greater likelihood of coming into contact with another human being.

Whereas, if 700 people in Inyo county travel 15 miles to the supermarket, the "distance traveled" is far greater, but there is less chance of them bumping into another human being along the way.

San Francisco county = A

Inyo county = F

Ridiculous.

Concur... I have to travel 18 miles to get to a grocery store but my cell phone seldom if ever moves, it’s always at the house and not glued to my azz.

When I’m asked if I got a text someone sent me my answer is probably. I’ll check when I get home.

I dont think this is illegally obtained. Its not individual tracking. Its statistical data and probably (guessing here) data that is tracked to monitor the health of the phone network, cell loading, etc for planning of new equipment and maintenance purposes. Its just being looked at through a different lens now. Thats very different than monitoring conversations or tracking individuals. I am sure that somewhere in the user agreements we sign but never read, this is something we agreed to. If one doesnt like it, we always have the alternative: stop carrying cell phones.

Leave your cellphone at home when you go out. Buy a burner phone. Put your phone in a Faraday box. Be creative.

While it is somewhat unnerving to know we're being unwittingly tracked at all times, the data is useful in providing a picture of social distancing at work

Every state, not just CA.

Apple and Google can sort out location-based data like this in about 5 minutes.

The data will be suppressed.

Nah, just tweak it with a hockey stick. There. Fixed.

All phones, whether they have GPS capabilities or not, can provide location information by measuring the phone’s angle of approach to cell towers, the time it takes the signal to travel to multiple towers, and the strength of signal when it reaches the towers. Sure you can leave it at home or put it a shielded enclosure — if you don’t want to make phone calls or texts. Because in order to communicate with any mobile device you have to connect to a network and the instant you do, your location can be approximately determined. Leaving your phone on all the time and connected to the network provides real-time tracking information and turning on GPS makes it more precise.

In addition, the IMU (inertial measurement unit) sensor in your phone measures movement even when out of GPS range or when the data connection is not available.

Don’t want to be tracked? Don’t use a mobile device. Period.

Used to go to the store once a month. Am now averaging three a week just to find the stuff that used to always be available. And when they have it, my purchase is limited so I have to come back earlier than I would have. Locking down the state hasn’t reduced the need to eat, drink or take care of others. . .

Most stupid result I’ve ever seen to compare and rate states and counties of how far the people are complying with stay-in-place orders by the distances they travel using GPS.

Looking at the listings, it’s obvious why the lower grades are measured the way they are. RURAL counties and states where the majority of people live long distances from shopping hubs will naturally travel great distances to get their staples for survival. . . Far more than will those who reside in urban areas. For example, in California, the top of the counties list, with an A+, is held by entirely urban San Francisco County, where residents can walk to grocery stores, while the bottom of the counties list, with Ds and Fs are all mostly rural, farming and forested, mountainous counties. In States, those that are dominated with large urban cities have low movement rates, but those that have no large urban cities, but only a few, centralized shopping areas where rural populations must travel dozens or even hundreds of miles to buy needed supplies are rated extremely low.

Talk about a system with an expected outcome!
