Hundreds of Iranians die after seeking cure for coronavirus

Hundreds of Iranians seeking a "magic cure" for coronavirus paid with their lives after drinking methanol.

Iranian media reported that at least 300 people died in the past few weeks after false reports claimed that drinking methanol aided recovery from coronavirus.

After over 2,500 people in Iran died from the virus, and another 33,000 were confirmed carriers, many Iranians turned to the "magic cures" offered to them. One of these "cures" was drinking methanol, a flammable, poisonous and colorless form of alcohol which is used as fuel and anti-freeze, and which can be used as a lethal poison.

Many Iranians decided to drink the methanol, despite the fact that alcohol consumption is strictly forbidden in the Muslim-ruled country. As a result, 300 of those who drank the methanol died, and another thousand are currently hospitalized.

Hussein Hasnian, an Iranian doctor working with Tehran's Health Ministry, told AP that "the scope of the problem is much greater. I estimate the number of deaths to be 480, and the number of those who became ill from drinking methanol to be at least 2,850."

"Other countries have only one problem, and that is the new coronavirus pandemic. We are fighting here on two fronts. We need to heal those with alcohol poisoning, and also fight the coronavirus pandemic."

No thanks. I’ll stick with the essential oil-soaked cotton ball inserted gently...

Methanol

Toxicity
Main article: Methanol toxicity
See also: List of methanol poisoning incidents

Methanol has low acute toxicity in humans, but is dangerous
because it is occasionally ingested in large volumes, often
together with ethanol. As little as 10 mL (0.34 US fl oz) of
pure methanol can cause permanent blindness by destruction
of the optic nerve. 30 mL (1.0 US fl oz) is potentially
fatal.[27] The median lethal dose is 100 mL (3.4 US fl oz),
i.e., 1–2 mL/kg body weight of pure methanol.[28] The
reference dose for methanol is 0.5 mg/kg in a day.[29][30]
Toxic effects begin hours after ingestion, and antidotes can
often prevent permanent damage.[27] Because of its
similarities in both appearance and odor to ethanol (the
alcohol in beverages), it is difficult to differentiate
between the two; such is also the case with denatured
alcohol, adulterated liquors or very low quality alcoholic
beverages. However, cases exist of methanol resistance, such
as that of Mike Malloy who was the victim of a failed murder
attempt by methanol in the early 1930s.[31]

Methanol is toxic by two mechanisms. First, methanol can be
fatal due to effects on the central nervous system, acting
as a central nervous system depressant in the same manner as
ethanol poisoning. Second, in a process of toxication, it is
metabolized to formic acid (which is present as the formate
ion) via formaldehyde in a process initiated by the enzyme
alcohol dehydrogenase in the liver.[32] Methanol is
converted to formaldehyde via alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)
and formaldehyde is converted to formic acid (formate) via
aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). The conversion to formate via
ALDH proceeds completely, with no detectable formaldehyde
remaining.[33] Formate is toxic because it inhibits
mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, causing hypoxia at the
cellular level, and metabolic acidosis, among a variety of
other metabolic disturbances.[34]

Outbreaks of methanol poisoning have occurred primarily due
to contamination of drinking alcohol. This is more common in
the developing world.[35] In 2013 more than 1700 cases
nonetheless occurred in the United States. Those affected
are often adult men.[36] Outcomes may be good with early
treatment.[37] Toxicity to methanol was described as early
as 1856.[38]

Because of its toxic properties, methanol is frequently used
as a denaturant additive for ethanol manufactured for
industrial uses. This addition of methanol exempts
industrial ethanol (commonly known as “denatured alcohol” or
“methylated spirit”) from liquor excise taxation in the US
and some other countries.

The effects of the collateral damage is worse than the ravages of the disease itself.

Islam preserves a most primitive definition of “purity” in their approach to general health and welfare of the great number of its practitioners, and even the most enlightened among their medical and professional ranks remain woefully behind most of the more advanced nations.

These poor souls would probably be better served to be taking a mixture of sulfur and molasses. Not sure how effective that would be, but surely less harmful than quaffing wholesale gulps of methanol.
