This Is How Long Thomas Massie's Challenge to the Wuhan Coronavirus Relief Bill Lasted

Well, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is probably the most hated man in Washington D.C. right now. He threatened to derail passage of the Wuhan coronavirus relief bill that sailed through the Senate on a 96-0 vote. It’s a $2 trillion package that admittedly has some bad stuff in it, but American businesses and workers need relief as the nation fights this Wuhan coronavirus outbreak that’s infected over 85,000 people and killed at least 1,200. States have adopted severe measures to stop the spread, instituting bans of mass gatherings of more than 10 people, closing non-essential businesses for a least a month or more, and shuttering the schools. The markets have tanked. It was imperative that the government compile this rescue package to help workers, stabilize the markets, and ensure that the flow of credit remains unrestricted.

Yet, Massie threatened to gum up the works unless there was a recorded vote, which would have put the entire House at risk of exposure to this disease. D.C., Virginia, and Maryland are virtually on lockdown, with the District recently shuttering non-essential businesses until the end of April. Massie’s antics forced scores of lawmakers to fly back in case he succeeded in his effort. This move had some calling for Massie to be expelled from the House.

“Yet, Massie threatened to gum up the works unless there was a recorded vote, which would have put the entire House at risk of exposure to this disease. D.C., Virginia, and Maryland are virtually on lockdown.”

I think you’ve got part of it. The part “unless there was a recorded vote” was the important part of the statement. As most votes are done by machine, it is not recorded for public view who votes what. Just that a vote was taken and a total number of conservatives and liberals voted for an idea, not what each voted.

Massie was trying to force them to vote so theirs was identified and they would be held responsible for it individually and would have to live up to their protection of the people they are using, the voters. This way if the spending of the trillions of dollars harms the economy, they can’t point the finger at Trump for sighing it as they were part of the determining gamble. Put up or shut up. They would have been identifiable as part of the decision making and would have to be held responsible for its failure, individually. And a roll call vote would have put them there. That’s why it took under a minute to get rid of that. If they were already there, what difference would the style of voting mean? Nothing. A roll call vote would have put them in line for any problems and they knew it.

That right there should have been the biggest red flag for Massie. If he couldn’t even get a dope like Justin Amash to back him on this, he would have been better off calling out sick for the week.

You’re right on your first point, but I’m not so sure about the second one. The first point is also irrelevant. Any Congressman who doesn’t like “pork” in a bill would never vote for a single bill at all ... and that’s something that was as true in 1790 as it is today.

Hmmmm. I see the illegals are DEMANDING they also receive $1,200 each. Well, I DEMAND they leave my country. Guess who stands a better chance of seeing their demands met. Hint. It ain’t me.

“I stand with Massie.”

Trivia: Who voted against entry in both WWI and WWII?

That highly principled American didn’t quite become a household name.

Jeanette Rankin. Only vote against WWII.

What say real conservatives on internetforums, for the voters in their disstricts, that mostly held opposing views?

Jeanette Rankin. Only vote against WWII.

She was right on WWI, not so much WWII.

“Jeanette Rankin. Only vote against WWII.

Very few people today understand much that fall outside the walls of their current silo or bubble.

She was a lifelong pacifist. Nixon was raised in the pacifist Quaker tradition.

Nixon joined the US Navy to serve his country in time of war.

My grandfaather was born one year after Raankin, and later registered for the WWI draft in Montana.

In WWII his son, my father age 17 rode the bus to Billings Montana, the train to San Diego to join the Marines.

Then why would Trump sign it?

Because he wants to be re-elected. If this were 2021, this bailout bill doesn't happen. We just ride this out as a nation. In an election year, you can't be seen as doing nothing.

Massie is the dumbest M.I.T. graduate I’ve ever seen.

The hammerheads that are against this bill, won’t be happy till AOC is running congress. Massie has had 6 years in Congress to cut government expenditures, yet he chooses now to tell every business person in America “fuck off.”

Guys like Massie need to join the Libertarian or Constitution Party.

I live in Massie’s district. Solid uber conservative district. We watch Massie always take the correct principled position. This bill has so much wrong. Giving Boeing cash and taking warrants is the government owning the means of production. Seems to me to be communism. Picking winners and losers is Obama style bailouts, didn’t that help birth the Tea Party?
Requiring legislators to record their vote so we can see who has read the Constitution seems reasonable to me. Tell me again how much time a recorded vote would have delayed the vote?
When you’re attacked by Lurch Kerry and Pelosi you’ won.
