Indian authorities in the northern state of Punjab have quarantined around 40,000 residents from 20 villages following a Covid-19 outbreak linked to just one man.
The 70-year-old died of coronavirus - a fact found out only after his death.
The man, a preacher, had ignored advice to self quarantine after returning from a trip to Italy and Germany, officials told BBC Punjabi's Arvind Chhabra.
India has 640 confirmed cases of the virus, of which 30 are in Punjab.
However, experts worry that the real number of positive cases could be far higher. India has one of the lowest testing rates in the world, although efforts are under way to ramp up capacity.
There are fears that an outbreak in the country of 1.3 billion people could result in a catastrophe.
The man, identified as Baldev Singh, had visited a large gathering to celebrate the Sikh festival of Hola Mohalla shortly before he died.
The six-day festival attracts around 10,000 people every day.
A week after his death, 19 of his relatives have tested positive.
"So far, we have been able to trace 550 people who came into direct contact with him and the number is growing. We have sealed 15 villages around the area he stayed," a senior official told the BBC.
Another five villages in an adjoining district have also been sealed.

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

When the article said “preacher”, I thought, “Uh oh, now the persecution of Christians is going to get even worse.”

India is a country where the poor live asscheek-to-face and the WuFlu virus is going to roll through that country like a storm.
I don’t expect there to be too many deaths because the mortality rate is way overblown.

When you are living asscheek-to-face in the gutter with lepers and T.B. cases, you're either very hardy already, or already dead.
Ain't no "at-risk" people like 85-year-old smokers with triple bypasses, diabetes, and cancer in India.

Its population is in hotter and way more humid climate conditions than China.
Heat and humidity may play a role in destroying and inhibiting the spread of the virus respectively.
Respiratory virus aren’t common in India even in its highly polluted cities
I wonder how much they actually have. This has been going on in Asia since January. India may not have great testing abilities but they have good doctors in their cities and they can count. If this has been rampaging through the countryside there would be bodies aplenty.

Oh boy. Dont tell that to the hysterians on here. I had a semi humorous thread up on using a sauna to help combat this thing and they got so upset they had the Administers pull it.
Sikhs call their spiritual leaders “Guru” AFAIK.
I’m accused of being one of the hysterians. Sauna sounds like an idea. When I used to hit the sauna once every couple of days, I never got I’ll. Anecdi know, but it seemed to work for me
All kidding aside. They use heat therapy for cancer treatment.
Concerning viruses-the fact is that heat breaks down viruses, including this one, and allows the bodies immune system to catch up.
Heat also helps the lungs break up all that crap that accumulates in the lungs.
AND besides all that. They seem to be trying to prevent medical people from using these older drugs to treat this thing. NY has yet to start the trials and they were supposed to start last Tuesday. THAT my friend, is a crime against humanity.
