Government Has Closed Wilderness to Protect the Public

The government has closed the wilderness in the name of safety. I talked with a Ranger yesterday, and this is what I was told. All access to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is closed.

Also, if people go out in the wilderness and get lost, injured, or dead, they (or their heirs) will sue the Park Service for not stopping them. Under the tort theory of “Attractive Nuisance,” other people can be held liable for the existence of a location in which you can do something fatally stupid.

What if we wanna die out in the wilderness rather than be kept prisoner in a city of idiots? I will wear my DNR pendent (Do Not resuscitate Rescue).

Yes, stay out of the wilderness. Go to New York City where it is entirely safe under the capable leadership of mayor De Blasio.

No, thanks. Greatest national exporter of COVID-19 infection at present. Mostly sending its infected citizens Upstate. I am sure Upstate New Yorkers love Comrade De Blasio about as much as the police officers do.

The solution could be to ban people from climbing or hiking with a written warning that they will not be saved. IOW - enter at your own risk.
The few people that fall or get lost is preventing the overwhelming majority who just drive through the park and maybe stop for a few pictures.

I used to be a media contractor for the NPS. I ASSURE you, this is a play for paid leave and nothing more. The admin is filled with self-important bureaucrats.

In areas where people live near by parks have been thronged by visitors all of whom plan on getting away somewhere where there’s no people and creating huge snarls of people who can infect each other.

Even if they sign a release, it’s not worth the paper it’s on in many states.

Instead of posting notice of closing of the parks, post notice that no aid or rescue efforts will be made beginning date certain. Let visitors decide for themselves.

Maybe they should ban people from the GSMNP forever, because of the liability concerns. Also, the campers are predominately white people. Shouldn't there be a special wilderness area for black people, Asians etc. This is so discriminatory.

The government knows what is best; I am sure they will solve this problem and establish a wilderness area for minorities!

People already “decide for themselves.” What they DON’T do is take legal or moral responsibility for themselves. Didn’t you see the woman blaming President Trump for her decision to poison her husband with aquarium solvent?

“This is why we can’t have nice things.”

To the Jersey Shore as well. We're really thrilled to see all those NY license plates on our roads!

This is the same stupidity that has “officials” telling us that Wyoming is the worst at improving their social distancing.....(least densely populated in the lower 48)
