Is a Once in a Century Fiasco Befalling the United States?
American Thinker ^ | March 24, 2020 | Steve McCann

The first pandemic of the 21st Century took place in 2009. It was commonly referred to as the “Swine Flu” or H1N1. It was notable for its rapid global spread which was facilitated by an unusually high degree of viral contagiousness and was most lethal in individuals affected by chronic disease or other underlying conditions.

The Centers for Disease Control has estimated that in the United States there were 60.8 million cases, 274,300 hospitalizations and up to 18,300 deaths due to the virus. Additionally, CDC estimated that 360,000 people worldwide died of the virus infection.

The previous global pandemic took place in 1968-69. It was a flu virus (H3N2) often referred to as Hong Kong Flu although it originated in China. Like Chinese Coronavirus it too took an unusual toll on the elderly with underlying health Issues. The CDC estimates that over 1 million people throughout the world and over 100,000 in the United States died from the virus.

During the entirety of these two pandemics there was no overwrought national panic, no massive government spending and bailouts or state-wide shutdowns. Nor was the mainstream media fanning the flames of panic by breathlessly reporting any and all worse case theoretical scenarios as well as maliciously fabricating headlines. In both pandemics the opposition party, the Democrats (the Hong Kong Flu) and the Republicans (the Swine Flu), did not aid and abet the media or gratuitously criticize the efforts of the Nixon or Obama Administrations.

Data from other countries show that is not remotely close to true, as does the Diamond Princess which had just over 1% death rate despite a massively elderly population and almost no young people on it.

Passengers on the cruise ships were isolated from one another before they were all infected, so there is no way to make a comparison based on them.

As far as New York goes, get back to me in two weeks, okay? Let's compare notes then. I'll be thrilled to be wrong.

“It is this same rabble that is now driving the nation to the verge of a depression and societal breakdown as they seize upon an illness to achieve their ultimate objective.”

Maybe the solution is to quarantine *them*, not the rest of us. Try it for 15 days, and see if things start to improve.

That is incorrect. That can take the age and races of those of the 700+ who were infected and adjust for the US population. Indeed a Stanford professor did just that and estimated 0.05% to 1% death rate for the US population. What you are talking about is the R0 (ability to spread), which will be higher on a cruise ship than most cities.

The Influenza Pandemic of 1918 https://virus.stanford.edu/uda/

The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed more people than the Great War, known today as World War I (WWI), at somewhere between 20 and 40 million people. It has been cited as the most devastating epidemic in recorded world history. More people died of influenza in a single year than in four-years of the Black Death Bubonic Plague from 1347 to 1351. Known as “Spanish Flu” or “La Grippe” the influenza of 1918-1919 was a global disaster.

Look at New York compared to other places in the U.S.

I believe the single most effective mechanism in the world for promoting widespread transmission of a viral or bacterial pathogen is the New York City subway system. You can introduce a virus anywhere in the world, and within one week I guarantee you it will be all over the NYC subway.

Why is the New York COVID-19 curve you’re showing there so steep? Because the NYC subway system is still operating EVEN RIGHT NOW.

This whole thing is a fiasco. Let these urban dumps that function like open sewers lock themselves down — and use the military to prevent anyone from escaping. The rest of us have no reason to abide by these stupid restrictions.

I’ve read hundreds of hundreds of articles on death rates on this and other epidemics. The death rates are nearly always significantly lower than estimated as the vast majority of mild and assymptomatic cases are not caught until they develop an antibody test and do random sampling (ie the denominator is incorrect) while we nearly always catch the bad cases. Again, the Diamond Princess has a SIGNIFICANTLY elderly population compared to the US - average age of 70 vs mid 30s for the US population as a whole and the death rate was just over 1% - and 700+ people is a significant population sample. Fear porn does nothing.

We have been isolating the wrong population. The cost of delivering food and 90 days free Netflix for anyone 60+ would have been far cheaper and more effective than the cobbled together, inverse s-—t show this has been turned into. Trust the government to do whatever it does bass ackwards.

They want the fear , it gives them purpose in their day to day lives. Panicking women and children for no reason should be against the law .

Diamond Princess death rate for a population averaging 70 years old is encouraging. This article from CNBC today says nine people died, up from 8. Sounds trivial, but when we are extrapolating from 3700 people to 320 million people it is significant. I can’t find any confirmation of the 9th death, if anyone can find it please advise.

During yesterday’s presser Dr Birx clearly stated that based on the CDC data for the US the mortality rate is ~0.6-0.7% without even calculating in the asymptomatic cases. She stated that the asymptomatic cases are also the biggest group thus the true mortality rate is much lower than ~0.6-0.7%.
