Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf (D) issued one of the more sweeping responses to the COVID-19 outbreak on Thursday evening: he ordered all "non-life-preserving" businesses in the state to close, indefinitely.
"To protect the health and safety of all Pennsylvanians, we need to take more aggressive mitigation actions," Wolf said in a statement announcing the new anti-virus measures. "We need to act with the strength we use against any other severe threat. And, we need to act now before the illness spreads more widely."
Acting "with strength" meant threatening fines, citations, and the loss of licenses to any business who defied Wolf's order for more than a daythe order to close took effect at 8 p.m. on Thursday, but enforcement would be postponed until Saturday morning, the governor's statement explained.
By the end of the day on Friday, governors in California, Illinois, and New York had issued statewide orders to shutter so-called "non-essential" businesses and telling people to stay home except for emergency situations. But all those states have more reported coronavirus cases than Pennsylvania does, and none of those other orders came with similar promises of punitive measures.
Republican lawmakers in the state's General Assembly criticized Wolf for the timing of his announcement. It was made after the close of normal business hours on Thursday, potentially leaving many businesses and employees unsure about what to do on Friday morning.
"The ill-prepared actions, announced after normal business hours, are not only an economic blow to every worker in the state right now but will have ramifications long into the future," Republican legislative leaders wrote in a joint statement. "It is incumbent upon all state leaders to recognize that long after we have defeated this public health threat, we must have the ability to create economic opportunities for all Pennsylvanians."

What are the people who rely on their jobs with “non-essential businesses” do for money?
Can you imagine single provider (govt) healthcare dealing with this?
Well exactly. Here in Canada I’m guessing 30 to 50% unemployment. We will see I guess. Feel bad for the great guys are our local coffee shop and restaurant. Great people but how long can they go without going bankrupt?
The government will give them Trillions to spend on items that are no longer available, and that they won’t dare to purchase until they are actually back at work. It’s economic suicide. All we can spend on here at the moment are groceries, car repair, booze, gas, and booze. Any money received will be used for rent, mortgage, utilities, car payments and - maybe - other personal debt. 2008 on steroids.
They rely on government, just as planned.
Tommie the Commie decrees:
Power plants and steel mills are essential. Coal mines are not.
(How do your run a coal plant or make steel without coal?)
Paper manufacturing is essential. Lumbering and pulwood is not.
(How do you make toilet paper without pulpwood?)
our modern economy is extremely interconnected and basically we’re all dependent upon each other ... example, doctors, nurses, policemen and firemen can’t get to work if their cars break down and they can’t get their cars fixed by a mechanic, and the mechanic can’t fix them if he can’t get the parts delivered, and so forth ... there are tens of thousands of examples like that ...
there’s an ancient proverb that sums of the situation perfectly:
For Want of a Nail
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
these Democrat governors ORDERING their entire populations to “shelter in place” are completely insane ...
This cannot continue. The business is essential for the employees. Every day of this means that the recovery will be delayed much more.
Can’t get a car repair if part stores are “non-essential”.
well my husband sells commercial supply/lumber his clients are hospital districts and school districts, NASA....
but he still needs auto parts to keep the fork lifts and trucks running
Truth is all businesses are ppl need to eat and truck drivers are having a hard time finding a potty because they closed the hwy rest stops.
And there it is.
Told everyone
Nope
Let it burn..
yes and they all wanted to increase population in urban areas by a million or so with illegals and H1-B foreigners sending us the bills in increasing taxes.
They are nervous & overwhelmed now giving their task force speeches they need to be slammed for the state our hospitals will be in due to overcapacity.
That Dallas County Judge is a BIG TIME ILLEGAL ALIEN CODDLER.
‘these Democrat governors ORDERING their entire populations to shelter in place are completely insane ...’
but the Republican governors who do it are not...?
iT’S NOT just businesses, it’s courts niece has 2 kids boy 14 15 in July, 9 yr old girl, they were in the middle of divorce, he’s a ex-con..DOPE,BOOZE he is STALKING THEM. CAN’T GET A RESTRAINING ORDER. He worked with many off the cops, drank with them. This is a small town. He abused mentally and physically the 14 yr old. Who has Duchenes MD, worse of the Md’s weighs about 80 lbs, the 9 yr old out weighs him but is naive, She knew dad was buying pills from out of state and from neighbor. Police are investigating, you know how slow that is if your friends with the Prep. He uses different vehicles, has people drive him.
The counselor was working with him, threatened to put the 14 yr old in Mental institute... Once DHS gets involved NO lawyer will take the case. When the already paid lawyer dumped her the restraining order became Null/Void.
Kids were so scared they now have personal alarms, girl also has air horn. He is sleeping with a butcher knife he hides from his mom. Kid mowed lawns all summer to bank for a car, he had to have an adult on it, good old dad. He gets NO bank statements, dad does. Dad stole the Income tax 2018 when he abandoned them. Leaving them broke but for her DSSI income, she herself has less than 5-7 yrs to live.
I made sure she would NOT be the next Terri Shivo, Power of Attorney for medical/finance for her parents.
This man will kill. NO court no law.
What are the people who rely on their jobs with non-essential businesses do for money?
````
let them use their trust fund money like everyone else
For want of nail is the perfect reminder of the snow ball affect of “unintended consequences” derived from government “do good” actions.
Politicians should think more like the doctors oaths, which begin with “first do no harm”.
If government action and money was needed, its priority was to shore up, beef up, build up the emergency response of the medical community. And the best way for doing that was to keep the economy running strong, NOT bring the economy to its knees, crippling the economic engines that will eventually have to pay for everything.
Are there no sticks, or corncobs, or moss? Sponge Bob Square Pants tied to the end of a stick?
Im doing my damndest to play my role here. I have steadfastly refused to abide by any stupid shutdown or shelter in place order any government official has given.
And I will not hold it against any business owner who closes shop because he or she thinks that is in their best interest right now, but I will say this: I will become a loyal, dedicated customer of any business owner who openly defies these destructive, idiotic measures and keeps their doors open.
