Pennsylvania Reopens Turnpike Rest Areas for Truckers
Breitbart ^ | 23 Mar 2020 | JOSHUA CAPLAN

Pennsylvania officials reopened over a dozen rest areas on a Thursday, heeding to calls from truckers who are working tirelessly to keep the country’s supply chains open amid the ongoing spread of the deadly Chinese coronavirus.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reopened 13 of its 30 rest stops on a limited basis on the interstates and throughout the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

PennDOT spokeswoman Alexis Campbell said in a statement that the sites will have five portable toilets, though the services plazas will remain closed due to a lack of cleaning staff.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission reopened all 17 of its service plazas at 7 a.m. Friday, though on a limited basis.

Turnpike spokeswoman Rosanne Placey said it had closed down the plazas to give 7-Eleven and HMS Host an opportunity to prepare plans on how to keep the facilities clean while maintaining standard service.

“We realize how vital [truckers’] service is so we’re happy we can reopen even on a limited basis,” said Placey. “Even with this change, the food service will be open on a limited basis. We can’t have a lot of people there and they can’t eat inside.”

The development comes after one of the country’s largest trucking trade organizations criticized the closings, saying the stops are critical to drivers for, especially during the pandemic.

“We understand this decision was likely made in an effort to limit passenger vehicle movement, interaction among travelers, and the state’s administration and supervision of these facilities during an emergency declaration,” the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association said in a statement on Tuesday. “However, rest areas are vitally important to truckers, who at this time are being heavily relied upon to transport critical supplies across the country.”

I hope public outrage over this turns Pennsylvania red as a tail light in November.

In USA and Canada we have lots of Sikh truck drivers and ever small Sikh owned truck stops with Sikh chow for them. I bet all these truck stops will be open.

You like chickpea stews?

Back in the day I made sure I had a bucket, plastic bags, large bag of cat litter, TP and wet wipes in my truck.
When you feel the need put the bag in the bucket, a scoop of cat litter. Do your business, clean up, remove bag and tie closed. Dispose of in nearest dumpster.
Cleaner than a portable toilet Petri dish.

A little air freshener in case those burritos you had fight back.

If you dig a shallow hole in the ground. do your business..then cover with small twigs and any organic matter ..leaves, grass..maybe put a rock or heavier stick on top..you are good to go.
In several months it will basically be humus.
Basically what they do at waste management. Although, they use stuff to break it down faster.

Why use a porta john when they can stop at a commercial truck stop while getting fuel and food?

Our governor is a commie and the person he has leading our respnse to COVID19 is an ugly mentally ill man that can't figure out what bathroom to use.

The hole in the ground isn’t a bad idea except when 30-40 drivers are digging their own holes. Ya run out of places for holes quickly.

Or when its raining cats and dogs.
Or snowing.
Or -15°.
Or daytime with no woods or brush around.

Plus local/state authorities don’t look kindly on people dropping trou even with a well dug hole.

Glad to see the Pennsylvania Turnpike finally did this. This makes all the sense in the world. I do not know who was the jackass that started to eliminate them, but I hope he is edged out. That was stupid.

Lack of cleaning staff?

Fine. Give members of the legislature proper equipment and a rota.

Put them to work cleaning the areas.

They can do something useful for the insanely generous salary and bennies they get.
