Vladimir Putin is apparently doing a bang-up job in containing the coronavirus. In fact, he has performed spectacularly.
Despite a population of 144 million and having a long border with China, the Russian health ministry has reported only 306 cases of COVID-19. What's more, Putin has been right on top of the testing issue. Russia has tested more than 133,000 people. With only 306 positive tests, this makes Russia second in the world with the ratio of positive cases to the number of tests. Only tiny UAE has a better ratio.
But before we offer our sincere and heartfelt congratulations to President Putin, maybe we should start looking a little closer at those numbers.
ABCNews:
If they have done that amount of testing, it is remarkably low, Paul Hunter, a professor of health protection at Britains University of East Anglia, told ABC News. But clearly there are both suspicious and non-suspicious explanations for that. I would be very pushed to say that data is false based just on the numbers. But in a country where the state has a long history of hiding bad news from its citizens and the outside world, the anomalous figures have triggered suspicions of a cover-up. No solid evidence has so far emerged to support that theory, but even officials have begun to sound the alarm that the official numbers cannot be trusted.
The number of all the infected is without question higher, but by how much?" Alexey Kurinny, a Communist party lawmaker who sits on the parliaments health committee, wrote this week. "2 times (minimal) or 10 times?"
There's no such thing as a "whistleblower" in Putin's Russia. You blow the whistle, you disappear. But what if the numbers are right and the virus hasn't spread much to the general population?

May be just incompetence or willful ignorance. People die, they don’t know why.
I wont call Putin’s data false but it is suspect.
Is phony reporting to mislead the public about the number of actual cases any worse than media-driven hysteria among nitwits in the public who empty the shelves of the grocery stores?
They just chalk it up to too much Vodka, or something.
They have a very low population density, which seems to be a very important factor in how many people get the virus.
Vlad turned all the lions and tigers loose out of the zoo to make people stay inside, is what I heard.
This is a tough call to make. Which perpetual liar do we believe?
Plus, the University of East Anglia sound familiar? Why is that?
Of course Russia is covering it up.
Either the Wu Flu or The Kremlin Flu.
...They have a very low population density, which seems to be a very important factor in how many people get the virus.
Yup - It, and limited social mobility, kept West(by gawd)Virginia off the lists for almost a week after all other states fell
If you don't test, only the very sick become known.
Absolutely shameful that there arent more deaths in Russia! Putins fault for sure!
Or perhaps their societal standards dont promote virus spreading? But no, lets instead claim cover up. Pathetic.
Stop ruining the fun.
First and foremost, Putin HAS NOT ordered the shuttering of Churches.
And the Russian Orthodox Hierarchs have not cowered in fear like many of their counterparts worldwide but especially in North America.
The “medicine of immortality” must be dispensed as often as possible.
The story from Russia is that coronavirus is one of a host of issues to be concerned about as I read Tass News Agency daily.
They are trying to carry on normally while responding to the coronavirus locally and globally.
Russian teams flew into Italy yesterday to help that country with Covid-19.
[They have a very low population density, which seems to be a very important factor in how many people get the virus.]
How about the very low numbers of Saudi Arabia & UAE’s?
