President Donald Trump touted a two-drug cocktail Saturday to battle the coronavirus. But the medicines together have been linked to cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death.
Concerned physicians responded to Trump’s tweet crowing about what could be “one of the biggest game-changers in the history of medicine” with warnings about the serious side effects — and urgent pleas not to try to obtain the drugs without a medical prescription in consultation with a doctor.
Hydroxychloroquine, sold under the brand name Plaquenil, and the antibiotic Azithromycin in combination have shown some early promise against COVID-19. But the drugs together have not been approved as safe or effective against the disease by the federal Food and Drug Administration. Any use must take into consideration a potentially deadly side effect.
Trump referred to the drugs at his Saturday press briefing and asked: “What do we have to lose? I feel very good about it.”
After the president left the briefing, his top science adviser, Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was asked if he had “any sense” of the drug cocktail the president referred to, and whether Trump’s “74-and-a-half million Twitter followers should be taking medical advice from him or from someone else.”
Fauci responded that there may be positive “anecdotal reports” — informally observed individual cases — about the drugs, but they haven’t yet been proven to work, or to be safe. “If you really want to definitively know if something works, you got to do the kind of trial that [gives you] the good information,” he said. “The president is talking about hope for people,” not science, he noted.

So coming from the Puff Po, are these Dr. stories “anecdotal”?
Trump likes to offer his opinions freely, like an average US citizen would do, say at a bar. Trump does not dress up his thoughts in political speak, couched in the requisite legal language (”should consult your health care professional, or should not be taken without your doctor’s advice”, etc.). He therefore leaves himself open for someone to dunk on him and charge him with providing medical opinion. This kind of thing gets him such headlines.
Anything to scare the people and keep the pandemic going.
Sounds like the drug ads on TV that will cure your ailment, but has about 500 “possible” side effects, usually including death.

The fatal cardiac effects of combining drugs that prolong the QTc interval is absolute fact, it is well known, and if these drugs are used unsupervised in the wild they will kill people.
This has nothing to do with Trump or the TDS people.

As another poster put up: I’d be looking at the results in other countries using before I’d listen to anyone stateside about right now...other than Trump, especially the Chinese-controlled monica media.

These people never give up. Everything Trump says is turned against him. If he said the sun was shining, leftists would say he was promoting skin cancer.
Every drug has side effects. Nobody should take any drug unless absolutely necessary and the benefit is greater than the risk.

In the current context of the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus epidemic on French territory and worldwide.
In accordance with the Hippocratic Oath that we have taken, we obey our duty as a doctor. We provide our patients with the best care for the diagnosis and treatment of a disease. We respect the rules of the art and the most recently acquired data of medical science.
We have decided :
· For all febrile patients who come to consult us, to carry out tests for the diagnosis of infection with Covid 19;
· For all infected patients, many of whom are not very symptomatic, have lung lesions on the CT scan, to propose the disease as soon as possible, as soon as the diagnosis is made:
- a treatment with the hydroxychloroquine combination (200 mg x 3 per day for 10 days) + Azithromycin (500 mg on the 1st day then 250 mg per day for 5 more days), as part of the precautions for use of this association (including an electrocardiogram on D0 and D2), and outside of marketing authorization. In cases of severe pneumonia, a broad-spectrum antibiotic is also used.
We believe that it is not ethical that this association should not be systematically included in therapeutic trials concerning the treatment of Covid-19 infection in France.
