Playboy magazine announced that it will be ending its print edition, due in part to the coronavirus pandemic.
Playboy's CEO, Ben Kohn, said the decision to stop printing the magazine had been discussed for some time, but was expedited by the global outbreak.
“As the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic to content production and the supply chain became clearer and clearer, we were forced to accelerate a conversation we’ve been having internally: the question of how to transform our US print product to better suit what consumers want today … [and] engage in a cultural conversation each and every day, rather than just every three months,” Kohn wrote in an open letter on Medium.
“We will move to a digital-first publishing schedule for all of our content including the Playboy Interview, 20Q, the Playboy Advisor and of course our Playmate pictorials,” Kohn explained.
“It’s no surprise that media consumption habits have been changing for some time … [and] our content in its printed form reaches the hands of only a fraction of our fans,” he added.
Playboy had already reduced its publishing schedule to four issues a year.

I think the last time I read a copy of Playboy, was around the summer of 1986...the edition which had something to do with Stallon’s Swedish wife (Brigitte Nielson).
I thought they already tried that.

Oh, goody. They want to “engage in a cultural discussion each and every day” as if things are not already messed-up enough.
Maybe they get some sort of tax write-off by claiming the coronavirus has something to do with their fading fortunes.

I think a better alternative than stopping altogether would be to print an extra thick annual with both new and classic content.
Advertising would focus on upscale and luxury items like they used to do, avoiding high tech but plebeian stuff. Basically selling a James Bond fantasy for adventurous millionaires, to be enjoyed by everyone. Jet setting tourism in first class.
200,000 circ is a huge loss. Why are they even publishing? I thought they stopped years ago.

Really a smart decision. I’m a member of three nonprofit social organizations and the NRA. All have gone digital with their publications. It saves vast amounts of money just on the purely physical aspects of producing, preparing, and mailing large publications. Suddenly there’s no more printing and no more postage.
