Italy reported 475 deaths from the coronavirus in one day, its civil-protection agency said on Wednesday.

That's the highest death toll reported in one day by any country since the coronavirus outbreak originated in Wuhan, China, late last year.

Even at the height of China's outbreak, its highest single-day death toll was 150, on February 23. Iran and Spain, both struggling with large outbreaks, have not recorded more than 200 deaths in a single day.

As of Wednesday, the coronavirus had infected more than 35,700 people and killed nearly 3,000 people in Italy.

Lockdowns arent working very well in Europe.

They came too late. The virus had a chance to spread.

That's why officials here are going overboard. They're trying to stop it before it gets out of control.

If quarantines works here and it's contained and there's little spread people who believe this is an over reaction will point to the few cases as proof it was an over reaction instead of recognizing the over reaction is what prevented the spread.

Seems every one of the many articles tallying Italy’s deaths due the virus rings up numbers, but never do they tell us the condition of the victims.

A Bloomberg article said the average age was 79.5 and 99% had other health problems, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Wow, I keep watching the Italian deaths for a peak and it just doesn’t happen.

When was the “peak” of the “OK, Italians, go out and hug some Chinese” campaign? Figure that out and count forward X number of days.

They're trying to stop it before it gets out of control.

Isn't it reasonable to expect that there will be clusters of COVID-19 that will be worse than others such as NYC, maybe Florida, and some larger cities?

In other words it may get out of control in some areas, but is "under control" in other areas.

But you won't know that by what the media and unfortunately others are writing - it is exploding everywhere. Surging everywhere.

“A lockdown doesn’t end the ChiCom Virus. It slows the spread.”

A voluntary lockdown slows the spread. In China people were forcibly confined to their homes for months. Problem solved.

A 60% lockdown compliance rate usually doesn’t stop a pandemic very well. That’s what they are reporting in Italy.

People in Northern California had to be told to stop calling 911 if the neighbor is coughing.

it has been an overreaction...other things should have been done first.....

we knew it hit the frail elderly the hardest....we should have shut down senior living facilities to visitors immediately as well as hospitals or any nursing homes..we should have told the vulnerable to stay home and isolate immediately.....

and the other thing is we should have done random testing to see the extent of the illness......to get a handle on how widespread it was....we didn't do that either....

instead, we shut down the entire nation, making matters worse, making people afraid, stressed, broke and emotionally distraught....and destroyed our economy and our retirement accounts all in one fell swope....

oh and encouraging stores to have shopping sprees for frail elderly....they are supposed to self isolate to stay free of disease, not mingle...but,its their lives...

Italy has more hospital beds per capita than the US.
Italy has 3.18 beds per 1000 people.
The US has 2.77 beds per thousand people.
Italy has an older population than the US so hopefully there will be a bed for everyone who needs one.

I don’t think they have many foreign workers over age 80.

Are those eyetie (Italian) reports on deaths caused by COVID being affected by PC ? Political correctness ? Are most of them Italian elderly which most comments posted here in FR assume or are they workers from China ?

Here is what they are doing in Singapore

Two hours. That’s all the time medical teams in Singapore are given to uncover the first details of how patients contracted the coronavirus and which people they might infect.

The NYS (slimes) did not go into what Singapore was doing but these postings did explain what and how it was doing which is well worth a look.

I don’t know if there is a “Trump sucks” angle, but my sister in law lives in Singapore. This is for real. They have people assigned at entrances with hand held infra-red heat guns. She said she was scanned 5 times just today. Anyo e who get hot they are inquisition to find out who they have been with? How long they felt like this? If they ever coughed in public do. Wwho? Their shelves in stores are full and there is no pani, from what she says. This is a very effective and organized way to handle the crisis. This is Priminister Lee speech to Singapore population on what they learned from the Sars outbreak to deal with this. Trump (and I love him) could learn a lot from Singapore.

My brother is living and working in Singapore. Has to get scanned several times a day.I was telling people that they could scan a crowd and see who is hot and cull that person. I’m not sure why NYC etc is not using this technology

Roughly 5,000 people in Italy die from the flu each year. The population is about 60 million, and there are 8.15 deaths per 100,000 Italians each year (14.91 for the U.S.A.).

Italy is a G7 country with world class hospitals and healthcare.
What you saw on TV is the makeshift hospitals that were set up for the overflow of critical and dying people. They are sanitized.

There was an article earlier today about the condition of those who died in Italy only “from COVID.”

It was two.

“They started locking down nearly a month ago. Which is past the incubation period.”

No, they had a regional lockdown Mar 8 and a national lockdown Mar 9.

The growth rate of new cases per day has dropped from >20 percent per day on Mar 9 to three days of 13 percent.

But, new cases are still growing, and the death rate is still growing for Italy.
