Italy reported 475 deaths from the coronavirus in one day, its civil-protection agency said on Wednesday.

That's the highest death toll reported in one day by any country since the coronavirus outbreak originated in Wuhan, China, late last year.

Even at the height of China's outbreak, its highest single-day death toll was 150, on February 23. Iran and Spain, both struggling with large outbreaks, have not recorded more than 200 deaths in a single day.

As of Wednesday, the coronavirus had infected more than 35,700 people and killed nearly 3,000 people in Italy.

That has absolutely nothing to do with it. The virus is here, and spreading rapidly. Once large cities get hit hard, and simply have more patients than hospitals can handle, things will get interesting.

We would not have HUGE problems in our hospitals if citizens were smart enough to know they DONT have to go to the hospital or ER just go home and get well unless you are elderly or immune compromised!! When people are calling 911 because they can’t get toilet paper is there any doubt the hospitals would be overwhelmed!!! It is ASTOUNDING how stupid some of our citizens are!!!

If that happened every day for a year, the total deaths would be 173,375.

First, the excuse was, “It won’t affect westerners.” Then the argument was that it was less harmful than the flu. Now it’s “Shut up! The economic crash will kill us—not the disease!”

Well, shutting up won’t stop the disease, and everyone will know what’s happening anyway. It can cause more than many deaths if not stopped. Large numbers of young people may have permanently damaged lungs. Much of the workforce would be disabled.

Let’s stop the epidemic, so the morons can afterwards claim that it was nearly harmless. But they’ll never have credibility with us.

"I wonder how it’s still spreading so easily despite the lockdown."

Until the end of next week, most people ill, or even dying now since it progresses more rapidly in those most susceptible, could have had it for several weeks and only started showing symptoms a week ago. Restrictions were only in some areas at first, not nation wide. No telling when and where those now very ill were exposed.

When the victims were exposed isn't being reported much. When they die is.

“The difference with us and Italy is we have President Trump who stopped flights from China early on”

Yep, Italy imported workers from Wuhan to work in textile factories. They were hit first, but stopping flights will just delay the inevitable.

On the Diamond Princess cruise ship, 20% of passengers tested positive for COVID-19, but never developed any symptoms.

Nobody on the Diamond Princess had symptoms?

I believe the stat was that 20% of the passengers tested positive, with no mention of which of those 20% had symptoms.

Then the argument was that it was less harmful than the flu.

What's your evidence that it isn't? I've read that 68,000 people die from the flu in the winter months in Italy every year.

The median number of days for the incubation period is 5.1 days.

Other than the fact that there are many elderly people in Italy, what other factors may be contributing to the high mortality rate?

Yep, Italy imported workers from Wuhan to work in textile factories.

More like the Chinese bought the factories and then brought in their own people. That way they could sell their product as "Made in Italy".

STRONGLY believe China lied...would explain the numbers and the welding people into their homes along with the commercial size crematoriums

“I wonder how it’s still spreading so easily despite the lockdown.”

You can look at any googled nation graphed.

A lockdown doesn’t end the ChiCom Virus. It slows the spread.
Plenty of incubators and spreaders are active until completed weeks later.

Yes. There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 200,000 Chinese living in Italy. How many of them have been victims?

“Once large cities get hit hard, and simply have more patients than hospitals can handle, things will get interesting.”

Big cities have lots of hospital beds and have a higher bed to citizen rate than small towns. Small town hospitals kick patients to big city hospitals every day.

"Seems every one of the many articles tallying Italy’s deaths due the virus rings up numbers, but never do they tell us the condition of the victims."

I suspect that they're pretty busy. We might see record keeping neglected here soon enough, too. The epidemic is about to blow up real good here in the States, unless we can slow it down.

By the way, I have some inside word on food and paper products in stores. Those items are produced here, in the U.S.A. About 7 weeks ago, stocking up for 2 months was a good way to go.

Now, though, the stores are full of the virus. There far more cases than have been found so far (two weeks ahead of what we think, as per Dr. Fauci). Buying only enough to stock up for about a week or two is better now, for those who didn't do it 6 or 7 weeks ago.

Wear gloves when out and about, if you have them. Pay careful attention to how you take the gloves off afterwards (use each glove to pull the other glove inside-out). Wash your hands before and after wearing the gloves.

Use your own bathroom before going out. Bathrooms in stores will be...well, you know, deadly.

Make your own masks. Don't listen to the hysterical claims and false marketing messages about those. A poorer mask is better than none. Just make sure that you can breathe well enough through it and won't suffocate.

It will slow down the micro-mist that comes out of you when breathing. Used properly (use your head), it will keep other people around you from getting infected to whatever extents. It's all about decreasing the viral load that goes into your body, your car or your home.

Just remember to clean it immediately (at home) after every use, and *don't touch it while wearing it.* When done with a cloth mask, put it in a bag for the laundry. Then wash your face and hands or take a shower if possible. Undress at the door at home first. Put the laundry in a tub full of soap and water on the porch before that. I don't have time for more about that, but you can think and figure it all out.

Oh, and be nice and polite when out and about with a mask on. Don't give anyone an excuse to think you're some kind of thug or maniac. And some of you folks in the West, okay it with the local store management first. Some of the stores forbid wearing masks (robberies in the past).

We're Americans. Let's act like it and beat this thing.
