“Stealth” coronavirus cases are fueling the pandemic, with a staggering 86% of people infected walking around undetected, a new study says.

Six of every seven cases – 86% — were not reported in China before travel restrictions were implemented, driving the spread of the virus, according to a study Monday in the journal Science.

“It’s the undocumented infections which are driving the spread of the outbreak,” said co-author Jeffrey Shaman of Columbia University Mailman School, according to GeekWire.

Using computer modeling, researchers tracked infections before and after the Chinese city of Wuhan’s travel ban.

Also 86% of the deaths from Wuhan flu are walking around not knowing they are dead.

I've seen them, many walking funny and seemingly wrapped in, toilet paper?

So is the regular flu.
That is why we have capitalism. People can go to medical school, become Doctors, and expand the system capacity - a function which happens naturally and continuously under capitalism but which only happens if some bureaucrats all agree to train more people under socialized medicine schemes.

Imagine trying to run that controlled study, get 1000 volunteers to just be subjected to various loads of the virus, hold them 14 days, and see how many get positives.

The administration has said there will be a million test kits available this week. If the CDC is not right now conducting a random sample of at least 10,000 people to determine the infection rate and by inference the mortality rate, then Trump should fire them all (if that were possible). My guess is that the virus has been here for months and there are hundred of thousands infected, most of which were/are asymptomatic or undiagnosed and recovered. If this is the case, we are destroying the economy for a flu.

look, we can't help it if people are old, frail, chronically sick...you can't ask healthy people to just quit living.....

the world must keep turning and somebody's got to do it...

for the life of the world, we've always had sickness....

from the beginning, the frail, elderly, and chronically sick should have isolated themselves, not the vast majority that are not sick.....I speak as a 66 yro with Diabetes and high bp.....

the fact that so many are up and about with apparent virus is actually a good sign....we're going to gain immunity and soon we'll have a vaccine for all...

Life is for the living.

And while losing potentially thousands of people to this new illness is tragic; we will lose even more than we save if people rush to hospitals and acquire MERSA which kills 100,000 per year in ‘normal’ times; and even more to medical errors due to overworked medical staff.

The death numbers go off the charts if there is violence due to societal breakdown; due to this self-inflicted economic suicide.

Best economy in 50 years straight to the worst economy in 90 years.

That’s going to have 2nd and 3rd order consequences that people need to pull craniums out of orifices TODAY and start to reverse the most draconian of the restrictions.

I don’t really care if I get flamed for this post. Flame away. You’re wrong.

” I guess Big Foot is 100% walking around undetected?”

That’s the theme from one a recent Sam Elliot movie.

Not a farm, couple of acres and my house is near, not at, the road which means anyone at my front door must come across about 100 ft of my property first which is why I worded my response as I did.

My boss has it. It was confirmed on Friday. He caught it while visiting New York.
He returned to Canada on March 7 symptom free (part of the 86% that are symptom free). He worked March 9 and 10 and began showing symptoms March 11 and tested the same day.
My family is under a 2 week quarantine as well as my 33 coworkers and their families. The company is closed for 2 weeks.
There’s no vaccine and no cure. If you don’t take this seriously you will lose 10% of your population within months. The economy will repair itself when this is over.

The test only checks for active virus. FOr a real evaluation, we need a test for anti-bodies.

I was pointing out that whatever the infection/fatality rate (in hindsight) appears to have been, it was nonetheless sufficient to require drastic action.

That's subject to debate.
