Supreme Court postpones oral arguments amid coronavirus pandemic

The Supreme Court on Monday postponed oral arguments scheduled for its March session, including a potentially landmark dispute over subpoenas for President Trump’s financial records, amid concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

A court spokeswoman said the move was “in keeping with public health precautions” in response to the outbreak, which has infected 18 people in Washington, D.C., and more than 3,800 nationwide.

“The court will examine the options for rescheduling those cases in due course in light of the developing circumstances,” the spokeswoman said.

The postponement affects six days of oral arguments slated for late March and April 1, including a March 31 dispute involving efforts by House Democrats and New York state prosecutors to obtain years of Trump’s financial records and tax returns.

The court in a statement said that the postponement of argument sessions in light of public health concerns is not unprecedented.

The older justices are Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 87; Stephen Breyer, 81; Clarence Thomas, 71; Samuel Alito, 69; and John Roberts and Sonia Sotomayor, 65.

Sotomayor is a brittle diabetic. She is probably nearly as vulnerable as Ginsburg.

Hmm. I wondered when this has happened before?

Eventually, everyone on the Supreme Court will have been appointed by President Trump.

Who cares? I agree with Justice Thomas. Oral Arguments are nothing but theater. Yeah, they can be interesting to read, but the only thing that really matters are the filed briefs, and the eventual decision. Just cancel orals for these cases, and get on with life. If they really insist on having OA for these cases, just schedule up a conference call and do it. It's 2020 folks, this ain't rocket science.

True, but a hundred years they didn't have such a thing as conference calls. Actually, they kinda did, as that was essentially what a party line was, but still...

I am amazed often at the short-sightedness of the lefties. They never seem to realize that the power they abuse can be used against them.

I would certainly love to see Slow Joe’s financial records subpoenaed.
