Dr. Antony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, urged Americans to shut down more aggressively as the coronavirus spreads.
On MSNBCs Meet the Press Mr. Fauci endorsed a 14-day national shutdown to help slow down the virus. He explained that he has brought it up with the administration, which is generally open to his ideas.
I think Americans should be prepared that they are going to have to hunker down significantly more than we as a country are doing, he said.
On ABCs This Week the doctor explained that lockdowns helped China and South Korea fight the rapid spread of the disease in their countries. China, he said, has reached its peak and is starting to see number of cases drop, whereas South Korea has flatlined.
However, he warned that while its hard to predict exactly how long the virus will be a threat, the U.S. should prepare for this to last for several weeks or a few months.
What we should be doing is absolutely much much different. Not business as usual. Just chill down, he said on ABC.
Across the nation, public schools and events are being shut down as states and local officials try to contain the virus.

Area National Weather Service Office cancelled several Tornado Spotter Training sessions. I asked if we had enough current spotters since the season is upon us and tornadoes also kill. They usually reply to my questions. Not this one.
“likely bring on societal unrest unlike anything we have seen as a nation. This isnt the 1930s. People will not stand quietly in soup lines.”
Which is why food AND ammo are good to have in abundance.
“If one person dies because of the delays, hell get blamed.”

This is a fact of life, the top guy has to take both the bouquets and the brickbats. CEO’s heads roll all the time when they fail to achieve this or that goal.
He said he wants America to “shut down”.
In France and Italy and probably other places in Europe that means stores and shops and restaurants are all closed.
It was raging so bad in Hubei that I honestly don’t see how their late actions could have possibly gotten it under control. I think they may have slowed its growth rate, but it has to hit 60% to 80% of the population to run out of hosts to infect. I don’t believe for a moment that they have gotten spread down to zero — there are just too many uninfected bodies just waiting to be zapped.
And, I'm 65 years old, a pilot, and in excellent shape and good health. However, if some stupid millennial were to carelessly sneeze or cough on me, I would make sure they spent more time in the hospital than me.
Really? This from the guy that says there will be "more suffering and death" in the news conference yesterday.
This is a serious virus that we must beat and we can beat. But Fauci has used some pretty blunt language and he should not be surprised when people ask him blunt questions.
True.
I was married to one of those. Got rid of him back in 1979, and kept the kids.
This whole thing is crazy and overkill.
I am kind of going with the train of thought that someone is trying to kill the economy.
Who is benefiting from this “crisis”? Why are they doing it? The question is why. These questions need to be asked.
I hate to sound like the Mr. X character in the movie JFK.
Same here. A question - why don't they get something on-line? This seems be the perfect way to get people trained.
Nuclear reactors have (IIRC) carbon rods that can be inserted to slow the nuclear chain reaction.
Supposing the virus will eventually make its way to every nook and cranny, substantially slowing it (minimizing social contact) while continuing most work carefully (work from home when possible) seems like a wise straddle between overwhelming the medical system and full economic depression.
Your right about that... Civilly is NOT what the last 2 or 3 generations know a heck of a lot about...
By Dean Koontz. A book entitled The eyes of darkness. Published in 1981. On page 312 it says:
In around 2020, a severe pneumonia like illness will spread throughout the globe, attacking the lungs and the bronchial tubes and resisting all known treatments. Almost more baffling than the illness itself will be the fact that it will suddenly vanish as quickly as it arrived, attacking again ten years later, then disappear altogether.
If the true number of infected and dead were ever known, it would astound the world.
We should have a slow down in order to keep the supply lines open. Trucks will still move and store shelves will be restocked soon. Better to ease in to a crisis than jump over a cliff in to one. This social distancing can make a huge difference assuming this virus danger is for real.
I live near McCord/FT. Lewis bases. The off base food vendors are voluntarily closing inhouse dining, drive-through only.
.........
Word has it (?) that those food vendors without drive-through will be placed off limits if there are any infections reported.
...........
Essential only travel off base is be asked for now, they may close the base.
Agree this guy needs to stay in his lane. Shutting down the country has the potential to do far more damage than a disease with a 1-2% mortality rate with the most at risk group (which includes myself).
What’s the logic?
Trader Rob, TRUER words were never spoken.
That is SO TRUE... but is usually always overlooked or intentionally ignored.
