~ Hall of Heroes ~ Henry Breault
Info from here. |
|
Henry Breault (October 14, 1900 December 5, 1941) was a United States Navy sailor who received the Medal of Honor for his actions while serving aboard the USS O-5 (SS-66) (US Submarine O-5). Henry Breault was born in Putnam, Connecticut, on October 14, 1900. He enlisted in the British Royal Navy at sixteen years of age and, after serving under the White Ensign for four years, joined the U.S. Navy. On October 28, 1923 Torpedoman Second Class Breault was a member of the crew of USS O-5 (SS-66) when that submarine was sunk in a collision in the Panama Canal. Though he could have escaped, Breault chose to assist a shipmate, and remained inside the sunken submarine until both were rescued more than a day later. For his "heroism and devotion to duty" on this occasion, Henry Breault was awarded the Medal of Honor. He received his Medal of Honor from President Calvin Coolidge, in ceremonies at the White House, Washington, D.C., on March 8, 1924. Following twenty years of U.S. Navy service, Henry Breault became ill with a heart condition. He died at the Naval Hospital at Newport, Rhode Island, on December 4, 1941. He was buried in Saint Mary Cemetery in Putnam, Connecticut. |
Rank and organization: Torpedoman Second Class, U.S. Navy. Born: October 14, 1900, Putnam, Conn. Accredited to: Vermont. G.O. No.: 125, February 20, 1924. Citation:
For heroism and devotion to duty while serving on board the U.S. submarine O-5 at the time of the sinking of that vessel. On the morning of 28 October 1923, the O-5 collided with the steamship Abangarez and sank in less than a minute. When the collision occurred, Breault was in the torpedo room. Upon reaching the hatch, he saw that the boat was rapidly sinking. Instead of jumping overboard to save his own life, he returned to the torpedo room to the rescue of a shipmate whom he knew was trapped in the boat, closing the torpedo room hatch on himself. Breault and Brown remained trapped in this compartment until rescued by the salvage party 31 hours later. (Medal presented by President Coolidge at the White House on 8 March 1924.)

Good evening, radu...hope you have a couple dry days before the rains come again.
We have possible snow tonight and tomorrow and then a couple days of clear and cold and nights below zero.
To: Kathy in Alaska
Howdy, Kathy.
Yes, we’ve had a few dry days but it would have been nice to have more before we get more rain. Just glad we got what we did.
Be glad you don’t live by the airport. They’ve had heavy snow most of the afternoon.
There’s a lot moving in from the south and I reckon you have a good chance of getting a dose.
I hope there wasn’t much melting today because that’ll make for mighty slick roads with the temps tanking.

High 20s today and some sun...means some melting. The main roads have been relatively dry...but I drive towards the airport in the morning. We will see then.

Could be an interesting drive in the morning but I hope not. Maybe there’ll be enough snow fall on the icy spots to help make them a little less slick.
Can’t say I envy ya’ll up there.

I hop you were able to get out for some fun with Gizmo yesterday. It doesn’t look like the prospects are good for an outing later today.
And that wet stuff will be here later tonight. :-(

Well, it feels a little warm this morning. I think it's supposed to clear later today but we'll see what happens.
Giz wanted to go all the way around the lake on the rocks but I'm too old to go all the way around and especially walking the rocks. One thing he enjoyed doing though is this:
We also walked the beach and did some tall grass activity.

It’s supposed to be fairly warm here all week so maybe it will be warm there too. I hope you don’t have rain every day like we will.
Ol’ Giz sure does love to roll, doesn’t he? LOL
It sounds like y’all had a good time, especially Gizmo. Rocks, tall grass, and rolling. Doggy heaven on earth. :-)

Good morning, Canteen.
Good morning to our
Military, our Allies, and their families.
Hat tip to
Henry Breault
Thank you, Ma for preparing
the Canteen for today's activities.
Just popping in to say Good Morning and to say Thank You
to all who have served and all who now serve.
Gotta run. We're on the road again today, and need to get an early start.
Please stay right where you are.
Chat up the military or a family member.
No need to fret...you know I'll be back!
Come in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea,
pancakes, conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS
