The controversial new bail and discovery reform laws are getting increased blow back from police following two incidents over the weekend where witnesses and a victim of a crime refused to cooperate with police.
Glenville Police Chief Stephen Janik says that these reforms doing more than just changing the way that police do their jobs. They are giving witnesses and victims of crimes reasons not to talk to police.
He says it's scaring away witnesses and even crime victims from coming forward. The Chief says in one case over the weekend, that fear that the crook will get revenge helped someone get away with stealing a wallet.
Glenville police say 29-year-old Andrew Carmello robbed a Stewart's Shops on Ballston Road with a knife.
Police say quick acting by witnesses helped them catch him in the act. He was arrested and charged with first degree robbery. He was released under the new bail laws, and was remanded to the Schenectady County Jail at his next court appearance three days later.
The Police Chief says the witnesses didn't want to talk to police, because the new discovery reforms could set them up for retaliation from the suspect.
"Their name and possibly telephone number and address would be included and given to the defendant within 15 days of their arraignment, said Glenville Police Chief Stephen Janik.

As they intended when they passed it..
How do you expect anyone to be a witness when the perp is walking around the street free as a bird?
Not an unintended consequence.
How else can you break the crime to prison pipeline.
With a 1911 in a shoulder holster....apparently. Bernhard Goetz we barely knew you.
They must want vigilantes, because this is how you get vigilantes.
Now back in the olden days...and I better stop there.
Sad, but maybe local “vigilance and Safety Committees” need to be formed. But that also eventually turns out bad.
Working completely as intended.
This is the result intended by liberal politicians. High crime levels with a disarmed population means everyone is begging the politicians to do something and willing to give them more tax money.
Liberals love crime and criminals. It fits their agenda.
And don't forget, that if people start arming themselves and end up shooting any of protected criminal class, that the call for more national gun control measures will be shouted louder and louder in WA D.C. It's all part of the libs plan to disarm law abiding Americans.
