ICE announced Friday that it had defied a California sanctuary law and arrested a repeat-felon illegal immigrant outside of San Franciscos Hall of Justice this week, prompting angry denunciations from local officials.
The arrest is the latest escalation between the Trump administration and California over immigration enforcement, with the feds pushing back hard on the states sanctuary policies through lawsuits, subpoenas, and now flouting the states own laws.
ICE said it had tried eight times to get local authorities to turn over the man, who was not identified by name, but each time those detainer requests were rebuffed.
So they tracked him down as he was about to enter the courthouse for a hearing, and made the arrest.
Our officers will not have their hands tied by sanctuary rules when enforcing immigration laws to remove criminal aliens from our communities, said David Jennings, director of ICEs San Francisco field office.
California last year enacted Assembly Bill 668, which attempted to make courthouse arrests without a judicial warrant illegal. That was aimed at ICE, which when its enforcing civil immigration laws cannot obtain a judicial warrant, but makes arrests on administrative warrants instead.
Mr. Jennings said ICE wont let that law govern how federal officers, following laws passed by Congress, do their jobs.
And he said its San Francisco that suffers by protecting people like this weeks target, who had three felony convictions for burglary in 2016, 2017 and 2019.

Good
Excellent job by ICE.
That’s a head-spinning headline. It’s as if ICE is the one “defying” the law.
Good.
But consider this scenario.
Replace immigration sanctuary with Second Amendment sanctuary.
Replace ICE with ATF.
It isn’t the law.
It is an illegal edict by liberal cities/counties.
Consider the response in each scenario.
Per the article, the response was harsh language.
The ATF will not survive for long as a functional entity in the scenario you posit. They will, sooner or later, have physical items forcefully directed at them, not harsh language.
Now if PDJT would PURGE the DOJ, FBI and BATFE, for starters, maybe we would start seeing more law and order instead of chaos.
It is Bizarre in the extreme, ain’t it?
Always fun to watch leftists pivot 180 degrees in a split second, depending on what the particular issue is. I’m pretty sure “States Rights!!” Is the Cause Du Jour here, but that will change. They believe in Federalism when it goes their way. “Immigration” enforcement is exclusively the purview of the Federal Government, we are told. Especially when said Federal Government refuses to enforce those laws.
In THAT situation, the Federal Government will SUE the states that dare to enforce “Immigration Law” in exactly the same manner they are required to, except they don’t wanna, ‘cause “feelings” or Reasons. Remember that? Arizona & Gov. Jan Brewer.
Yesterdays settled law becomes today’s “Resistance!!”. Heads they win, tails you lose.
ROCK ON, ICE!
Come to Colorado soon
Who gives a shi! what that shi! house San Fransisco says or does. Make arrest in the courthouse and warn the presiding judge that jail time could happen.
Since when a federal agency should abide city rules? I’d say in most sane countries local officials issuing such rules would be disqualified at the very least but most likely prosecuted for abuse and treason.
Great points. Thanks!
YAY, ICE!
It is so hard for me to understand why the people of California continue to put up with allowing criminals to be constantly released back into society to continue robbing, stealing, assaulting, and murdering their people...
WTH is WRONG with y’all????????
The ICE agents were outside of the state courthouse when they arrested the guy. The California pols can complain, but they can’t really stop the federal agents from doing their job.
IIRC, we fought a Civil War over that very point.
Spot on!
Now tell me you trust the SF counsel clowns of the border issues more than to the feds.
Immigration is a federal matter.
Let the city deal with the homeless and clean crap.
