There are many compelling reasons to conclude that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is not nearly as deadly as is currently feared. But COVID-19 panic has set in nonetheless. You cant find hand sanitizer in stores, and N95 face masks are being sold online for exorbitant prices, never mind that neither is the best way to protect against the virus (yes, just wash your hands). The public is behaving as if this epidemic is the next Spanish flu, which is frankly understandable given that initial reports have staked COVID-19 mortality at about 23 percent, quite similar to the 1918 pandemic that killed tens of millions of people.
Allow me to be the bearer of good news. These frightening numbers are unlikely to hold. The true case fatality rate, known as CFR, of this virus is likely to be far lower than current reports suggest. Even some lower estimates, such as the 1 percent death rate recently mentioned by the directors of the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, likely substantially overstate the case.

Oh NO! We’ll all going to LIVE!
All we know for sure is the numerator.
We have no true measure of the denominator at this point.
The “concerned” are deeply saddened.
NOOOOOO!
Lol
The denominator can only get larger.
How dare you post that on FearRepublic! Dont you know this site is supposed to keep the media panic going until we get a recession? It is the only hope of getting rid of Trump.
Fauci says its still too early to determine U.S. death rates from coronavirus outbreak
Dr. Anthony Fauci told Congress it remains hard to determine fully accurate mortality rates of the disease.
Researchers are still trying to ascertain the exact number of people who have gotten the illness, as it can be asymptomatic for some.
The World Health Organization on Tuesday elevated its estimated mortality rate for the disease, a decision it made because there werent as many asymptomatic cases as it thought, Fauci said. .....
We dont even know who has it here let alone who has died from it here.
Yesterday, a coughing guy coming back from Singapore couldn’t even get tested at the Pentagon health care or whatever it is they use.
There were 3700 people confined, in close quarters, on the Diamond Princess.
Why didn’t all 3700 get the virus? Why did only 6 (all over 70) die?
...we need to focus on the right people and the right places. Nursing homes, not schools. Hospitals, not planes...Healthy people who are hoarding food, masks, and hand sanitizer may feel like they are doing the right thing. But, all good intentions aside, these actions probably represent misdirected anxieties.
But the most annoying thing about this article, is the complete and utter poor math skills. Many of us on FR have debated this calculation vs that calc, but we don't disagree on the formula. The author gets basic calculations wrong and mixes and matches concepts.
But then, it IS Slate.
Fauci is correct.
Testing is just getting started.
It will be several weeks before we can begin to figure out a realistic US mortality rate.
Of course, mortality rate is just one important element of the disease. If a lot of folks get seriously ill, they will outpace hospital capacity. That in turn may increase the mortality rate if patients can’t get adequate treatment in a timely manner.
We are in the first inning, and the article is trying to tell us the final score.
3,285 worldwide deaths / 95,411 infections worldwide
= 3.44%

The dopes that keep breathlessly following it (mostly only if it is high enough to get some good scare headlines) dont get that it is a FLOATING NUMBER that isn’t based on the virus itself, but on many factors and variables. That is why it fluctuates widely in the beginning, and then precipitously drops.
The approach of the "A" team a lot better than the battle going on between the fear mongers and those who are insulting the fearful. Keep it real, take it out of the emotional plane and let us know what the experts are doing to get it under control. You know speak like adults and treat us like adults. It goes a long way to establishing confidence and garnering trust and respect.
No none knows the true death rate, even Johns Hopkins. Because not all cases are reported.
I dont know whether its worth responding to this or not, but I truely believe you are off base on why people keep posting about the Coronavirus.
I see it as an issue thats going to challenge the Presidents leadership , but one that he will rise above and show the country why hes the leader for this particular time - his immigration stance being one area.
But if you dont believe the virus is harmful, give the exponential growth of cases a few more weeks. Germany, France, Spain, and England are seeing new cases expand by 20-30% a day - they could all be in the thousands by next week.
Ask Dr Fauci...he’s the one saying we don’t know the actual death rate, yet.
Why did 700 out of 3.700 people get the infection, on the Diamond Princess?
Again, ask Dr Fauci. He can’t even guestimate the actual death rate, at this time.
