American shoppers flock to branches of the major department store Costco across the country in order stock up on supplies in fear of a coronavirus outbreak, CNBC reported.
The various necessities being sought include hand sanitizer, paper towels, trail mix, water and surgical masks, all of which are being bought in bulk.
Citing Nielsen, CNBC reported that hand sanitizer sales are up 73% since February 22, while surgical masks sales are up 319%.
However, Nielsen added that it does not expect hand sanitizer sales to peak any time soon.
The sudden surge of panic-induced shoppers is predicted by some to cause a rise in Costco shares. We expect material comp benefits for Costco, analyst Rupesh Parikh told clients, according to CNBC.
Our observations and conversations with store employees [and] management suggest a strong pickup in traffic starting Thursday through at least Saturday.
On Monday, Costco shares rose 4%.
However, the sudden surge of customers stocking up on supplies could also result in less demand in the future, as well as a depletion of stocks.
Already, local reports in Oregon confirmed that a Costco in the state ran out of toilet paper.

Not in Ann Arbor,Michigan. No panic, shelves fully stocked.
Swarm!
Flock!
Boom!
Wow!
The only headline that has not shown up on Drudge yet is....”WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE”....
....this krap will be gone by this time in a couple of weeks...if not sooner....just watch.
exactly- we ‘bottle’ our own water- use a britta water filter, and keep a few large bottles of purified water- Not sure what the big panic is over storing up on water and food- this isn’t an apocalypse- or invasion- it’s a flu- do people think that having hte flu will mean food supplies run out at stores or something?
Get a zero water filter- should take the taste away- or make it much better tasting at least-
“ran out of toilet paper.”
That is really a shitty situation.
Media induced mass hysteria!
Our world is going insane! This sh*t is custom made for totalitarians!
[[I see no panic buying in the South Carolina.]]
try to find soem hand santizer or lyson or bleach- peopel where i am aren’t exactly storming hte stores, but they are still emptying shelves of these things-
Unless you want to order from them online??????
We do have one, and I use the filtered water for cooking and pets.
I’ve seen the filter when I change it, too. :-(

I agree, and have said as much!
we don’t really have to use one, as the water where we are is pretty good, but still, they do treat it at the plant, so we filter it for drinking only- mostly- I don’t bother sometimes, but once the water to smelling pretty bad, and had a slight weird taste and our britta did a good job reducing the odor and making it taste good- Just wish it woudl filter the wter a bit faster-
I hear ya brother. My wife is at Costco today for the same reason. Normal resupply stuff. She’s always paranoid if we dont have several months of everything.
Just go today or tomorrow before closing.
You’ll find 90% of what you need I’m sure.
I had 6 surgeries in 2019 and got really familiar with Amazon, Safeway and Costco deliveries. Now that I can actually shop in person I still tend to stay away from Costco and continue to use their delivery services. Prices are a little higher but I find it's worth avoiding so many clueless shoppers.
Mine ran out of Diet Coke and M&M cookies last weekend. Plenty of TP and water, but no Diet Coke.
I will try find hand sanitizer today to see. If I can not find any that means people in SC have been slowly preparing like me.
That's when the bio engineered time clock switches off.
I found it amusing that my wife has flipped from “why do we have so much hand sanitizer?” to “maybe we shouldn’t use it so much and use the hand soap more”
FTR, I bought a bunch of it along with other school supplies, but as I don’t have my own classroom, the bottles are never put out. I basically just refill the sample bottle that I carry in my pocket. I don’t overuse it, but if I have to move desks around and there’s no time to wash up, it’s nice to have.
