It seems so long ago that the first openly gay candidate won the Iowa caucuses. Mere weeks later, the Pete Buttigieg campaign is now past tense, as the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Wherever that leaves Buttigieg and his future political prospects or any future LGBTQ candidate this moment affords us an opportunity to ask ourselves where the nation as a whole really is in terms of acceptance of LGBTQ candidates.
To be clear, Im not arguing that Buttigieg was unsuccessful only because of homophobia. But lessons from this cycle do allow us to be honest about the challenges that LGBTQ candidates face. While these issues may not have gotten a lot of attention in 2020, Buttigiegs campaign demonstrates how many problems of homophobia still remain.

Homosexuality hurt Pete as much as the media tried to force it upon us.
If they can’t figure out which sex they are by looking in a mirror naked or what type of hole to put their pecker in, why should I trust them to do anything right??
For PETE’S sake! He was a FAILED Mayor of a small town. Hated by Blacks. Stole his mannerisms from Obama.
Being a Bone-Smuggler had nothing to do with his failure.
Well, this was inevitable. “You don’t like my candidate because you’re a bad person” is the first recourse of a sanctimonious liberal. This story was probably canned weeks ago for later use, such as when Trump wiped the floor with the guy in a debate - it’s a regurgitation of “You can’t not like 0bama or you’re a racist,” or “You have to vote for Hillary or you’re a sexist.” We’ve heard it all before.
This American is GLAD Buttgiggity dropped out. If “homophobia” is the reason, then let’s hear it for homophobia!
Ok, how go vote for one of those old white men for President.
Homophobia implies fear of homosexuals.
Personally, I do not fear people with mental issues and gender confusion.
I wouldnt vote for anyone but Trump it has nothing to do with Pete.
And let that be a lesson to ya.
Good. Perhaps there is still hope.
I think we should have a homophobic pride parade!
I realize that the bar for DUmocrat candidates is set pretty low, but “he/she/it” (ala Bloomberg) was among the most unqualified person to ever run for president.
Hmm, the article is telling us people NOT voting for Buttface (all Rats plus a few Chaos GOP in the primaries) are homophobic.
The article has to be referring to ‘rat voters since he only ran in ‘rat primaries.
Homosexuality can be a pain in the butt, too.
Maybe the door will hit Buttgag in the butt on his way out the door . . . I am sure he will enjoy it.
It’s not so much that he is a peckernecker that is the problem but rather it’s that he is a filthy democrat.
What’s the deal here?
Buttgig is a Democrat. The Democrats are the liberal party. The Democrats are the party of all this LGBT stuff.
Buttgig faiked to gain traction in Democrat primaries, among only Democrat voters.
This article is really saying that Democrats are bigoted against homosexuality. It’s not America overall, but Democrats who rejected Pete, for whatever reasons they choose to vote for or against candidates for office.
Rush you brilliant bastard.
