Turkey Announces its Intention to Go to War with Russia

Mesut Hakki Casin, a prominent member of Turkey’s Security and Foreign Policy Board, who advises Erdogan, said: “We have fought Russia 16 times in the past, and we will fight it again.“

Casin made his statements following the death of 33 Turkish soldiers who were killed in an airstrike by Russian-backed Syrian forces in Idlib.

The official hinted that they will use Muslims inside Russia to assist them with their efforts saying that Moscow will be “will be shattered from inside” should a war break out between the two countries.

Following a request from Ankara, NATO convened an urgent meeting to review the situation in Idlib on Friday. Turkish officials vowed to retaliate against Syria following the attack on their troops.

Russia will probably get its clock cleaned. Geography is on Erdogan’s side. He has land access to Syria, and Putin doesn’t.

The easiest way of preventing Turkey from doing whatever it wants in Syria would be an attack across the Russian border with Turkey to force the Turks to divert their forces away from Syria. Problem is Article 5 of the NATO Charter, involving an allied response to attacks against a NATO member’s territory, would come into play. The Article 4 meeting might have been an attempt to gin up NATO support just in case the Russians decide to start bombing Turkish bases from facilities in Russia proper.

It would be interesting to see whether Putin orders airstrikes against Turkey from Russian bases, if the Turks move further into Syria, and perhaps against the Russian air base there. However, I seriously doubt the Russians want to start trading aircraft with the Turks, because they’re pretty expensive. But it could happen, if Erdogan ups the ante. The issue for Putin is that the Turkish air force is a lot more capable than what the Ukrainians and Georgians had, both equipment- and personnel-wise. NATO standards are fairly high, and Turkey is one of the better-armed NATO members.

And when I say the land border with Turkey, I mean Armenia, even though that is separated from Russia proper by countries not necessarily friendly to Russia, such as Georgia and Azerbaijan. One of them could, however, be paid off, on a one-off basis to let supplies through to Armenia.

I hope the Russians liberate Constantinople.

Yes, because we want Russia to swallow the strategic Bosphorus. It makes US security stronger.

Yeah. I’m no fan of the Russkies but I wouldn’t suggest poking the Russian bear, certainly not a piss ant country like Turkey.

They would do the same to us.

“We should tell Putin, do what you want with Erdogan and Turkey but ground troop crossing the border into Turkey is a no go, but bomb them into stone age if you want...”

Boots on the ground (speznatz) should be ok as long as they are used to specifically take out EGO-dan and his mullahs.

Was a horrible, disgusting tragedy but should we stop importing BMW, to say nothing of Krupp’s products because of the Holocaust? Besides, the Turks were pikers compared to the Russians in the mass murder department.

Here is another fact. Believe it or not.

Russia has a naval port on the coast of Syria. If anyone thinks they’ll simply bow to threats from the likes of Turkey, they have another thing to think about.

That naval port is the only round the year port they have with easy access. They’ll fight to save it and that is why they are in Syria. Aint no way in hell they’ll chance Turkey blocking off the Black Sea to their access-historical agreement or whatever..

People here need to think in more broad terms.

BTW, I believe Russia will use nukes on Turkey if they have to.

Well, if Turkey goes to war with Russia, they go on their own. NATO rules don’t count when they start the war.

Like this base? Better read that carefully. They can put Nuclear capable ships there.

Oh I know, Russia’s navy is crap. But are their existing subs dangerous or not? Are they missile capable yet? As are some of their smaller vessels?

Compare it to Turkey’s.

They can’t use nukes against Turkey. They can threaten to use nukes, but they can’t use nukes. If they did use nukes, the minimum response would be a total trade embargo on Russia. The maximum - in response to a nuclear attack on Turkey proper - would be the nuclear annihilation of Russia. Turkey is a NATO ally. Until it isn’t, that’s the default US response to a nuclear attack on the territory of a NATO member. And a nuclear attack on Turkish positions in Syria - that’s not something that would fill Assad with gratitude.

Any Russian nuclear use that isn’t on Turkish soil would just bring about an entire chain of escalation. Uncle Sam is finally going to build a missile defense shield like Israel’s - something very expensive that covers the entire CONUS, at minimum.

Cant use nukes? Wanna bet? The Turkish navy comes out to play and one of the Russian subs uses a nuclear torpedo. IN A NANO SECOND.

The Russians are crazy enough to do it.

A war between Russia and Turkey-IF Turkey starts it, will result in NATO backing off. That is IF Turkey starts it.

Russia WILL NOT, allow its black sea fleet to be blocked off from access to the Med. Forget it..it aint gonna happen.

Turkey simply wants to escalate a war to try and drag NATO into it.

Then comes the issue of the Kurds. One group of Kurds are communists. PKK? Cant remember now. Anyway, the Turks will find themselves fighting the Armenians, Georgians, Russians, Kurds and anyone else around their who has an axe to grind with the Turks.

Israel will become real nervous. There is where we will come into play. If the Muzzies strike Israel, all bets are off in that theater of ops. And them SOB’s are crazy enough to do THAT. The Turks get into it with the Russians, Iran takes a swipe at Israel..and WW3 starts..maybe.

Ultimately, I expect that’s what the Article 4 meeting was all about - a request for reassurance that the American nuclear umbrella remains operative against Russian nuclear attack. The problem for Putin is that he lacks a good land route. Things would have been a lot easier if Georgia were part of Russia. He could then ship stuff through Iran and Iraq. But even there, the rivalry between Iran and Russia for influence in Syria makes that route an open question.

And then there’s the question of how much money he wants to spend on bases in Syria that are strong enough to ward off Turkey. He’s got issues keeping up with the Chinese build-up in the Russian Far East. The Chinese are closing in on $300b per year in military spending, vs Russia’s $60b.

Resource prioritization-wise, I’d think keeping the Russian Far East safe is far more important than puttering around the Mediterranean. It’s only a matter of time before the Chinese move on Mongolia, which would remove a key buffer state slowing down any Chinese move north on Russia east of the Urals.
