NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - Nashville is hemorrhaging police officers at a time when more are needed than ever before. Thats according to the union president who says the problem has become a major public safety concern.
Even if we were fully staffed today, we would not have enough officers, said fraternal order of police president James Smallwood.
42 officers recently graduated from Nashvilles police academy. In a few months, the graduates will be out on the streets, risking their lives, to keep the city safe.
Im just proud to be doing the job Im going to be doing, said officer Beri Scott.
The problem is, 42 isnt enough, because Nashville is experiencing explosive growth.

That’s part of the plan. Make becoming a cop unattractive.
Yep. And they have a huge homeless problem. Doesn’t make me want to go back.
Huge shortage in DC area as well. The good news is, if you get a traffic ticket, go to court. 50/50 chance the officer wont show up. I was in court 2 weeks ago, packed court - most people were found not guilty because officers never showed up.
Unlike most of Tennessee, Nashville is run by Democrats. Just like Memphis.
Coming to cities near you.
It’s working well.
I wouldn’t be a cop for anything. Besides I would make a terrible cop with a short career.
Nashville cats, play clean as country water
Nashville cats, play wild as mountain dew
Nashville cats, been playin’ since they’s babies
Nashville cats, get work before they’re two
Well, there’s thirteen hundred and fifty two
Guitar pickers in Nashville
And they can pick more notes than the number of ants

Used to love Nashville when my kid was at Vanderbilt. But thats been over 12 years ago.
Nashville also has an increasing minority population....I don’t know what outsiders think of Nashville but its a city, not a quaint little country music haven....country music doesn’t exist anymore,on todays radio...
And Country music has gone Leftward in recent years anyway.

I’d rather pay the ticket than sit in a crowded court room with Godknowswhat bugs floating around. That was true even before Corona.
This is the change Obama talked about.
Bummer. All the retired boomers looking for an excuse to spend their money and these cities are telling them where they can stick it. The cops first job is to keep people like me from getting my butt kicked. I’ve got the money. Do I threaten anyone? I’m 65. Concealed carry permits is the answer.
Carry permits are available here and those of other states are honored.
Nashville just passed a law that allows a citizen council with no knowledge of the law or police procedures to second guess the Metro police. As predicted, a lot of good officers left for other towns.
Yes, Puffy. Tell me something I don’t know. We’ve been short on cops for close to 30 years.
Yes, the Criminal Protection Board. The presumption is all cops are evil racists and Tyrone J. Thugg with a laundry list of arrests who runs from a cop with a concealed firearm and acts like he’s about to shoot (or does) and gets killed by cop is innocent as sunshine. The state legislature should’ve outlawed those from day #1.
Really quite sad: I was brought up to respect and admire them, and I did. Until I ran into more than a few crooked ones.
All reporting them and their illegal activities to their peers and supervisors got me was targetted. I haven't always felt like the below, but I have for longer than I didn't...
