Trump upends controversial surveillance fight
The Hill ^ | 02/27/20 | Jordain Carney

Posted on 02/28/2020 7:30:07 AM PST by yesthatjallen

President Trump is threatening to blow up an extension of expiring intelligence programs as he backchannels with a cadre of top allies who want to use the bill to reform a shadowy surveillance court.

Congress has approximately 10 working days to reauthorize three expiring provisions of the USA Freedom Act, a 2015 bill that overhauled the country’s surveillance laws, with Attorney General William Barr and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) backing a “clean” extension.

But Trump threw a grenade into those already fragile plans Thursday, when Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) told reporters that the president supports his effort to include broader reforms of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) as part of any reauthorization of the intelligence programs.

“I’ve talked to the president, and I plan on insisting on getting a vote,” Paul said, asked by The Hill about including broader FISA reforms in a bill would authorize the expiring provisions of the USA Freedom Act.

Paul wants a vote on an amendment that would prevent FISA warrants from being used against Americans. Paul’s proposal would also prevent FISA information from being used against Americans in a domestic courtroom. The president, according to Paul, is supportive of his amendment.

“If we don't fix FISA now, it will never be fixed,” said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.). “This is our opportunity. This is our chance.”

Throw it all out.

And somebody take Barr’s damned bagpipes away and tell him to convene some frigging Grand Juries already.

Multiple frauds were committed against the FISA court and NO ONE has been held to account.

Find a way to cripple or, better yet, eliminate the possibility of Deep State and rogue bureaucratic activity.

FISA in the hands of the left poses more of threat to the future of our country than terrorism.

Amen.

Throw it out. We have a federal judiciary.

This is the only real chance Trump has to pay back the entire system that led to impeachment. They all will be out of jobs.

He should VETO any attempt to extend it and tell Republican leaders to let it die on the vine.

I don’t know about the other provisions of the surveillance act being renewed. But the FISA Court is proven to be broken and must be repaired or scrapped. How could any politician disagree? When something is broken, fix it or pitch it. Simple!!

FISA warrants are so rarely used in a criminal trial, that it’s a easonable approximation to say they are NEVER used in a criminal prosecution.

Most of the aggressive snooping is done with no warrant at all, or some sort of “blanke authorization.”

FISA reform won’t change the extent of warrantless snooping one bit. All this maneuvering is window dressing.

McConnell sometimes can be a simple minded jackass but as for Barr, he is looking like he may be part of the swamp. For once Rand Paul is right on and thankfully President Trump is right on that this court needs total rebuilding.

FISA doesn’t need rebuilding. It needs to be burned to the ground. M

Not only no, but HELL NO!

Barr is beginning to rub me the wrong way. I’m starting to think he belongs in the Lindsey Graham bin.

What an absolute bag....

But a tad better than the last one BUT that is like saying a cobra bite is worse than a krait bite or vice versa.

Pretty much ‘screwed’ either way.

Tell XXXX I will have more flexibility after the election.5

I’m with those in Congress who are brave enough, for example Scalise, to get to the crux of the crime, which is:

PEOPLE NEED TO GO TO JAIL OR ELSE FISA NEVER GETS FIXED!

Someone here posited yesterday that the establishment will short-circuit this by tying FISA reauthorization to coronavirus funding. Trump will take a seriously pummeling if he vetoes given the hysteria around that.

There is a logical argument for a “clean” extension and it’s this:

Under Obama thousands of terrorists became naturalized US Citizens. Reform could drop them off the radar.

Personally I’d rather take my chances with terrorists than with the Deep State at this point.

Get rid of the FISA courts. They need a total redesign.
The court was weaponized against the People by Obama. DO NOT RENEW IT.

Let Alan Dershowitz show the way. He is proposing an excellent model.

“We need to reshuffle the entire FISA court,” Dershowitz said. “We need to have a defense attorney in there with security clearance who plays the devil’s advocate, like when the Catholic Church gives somebody sainthood, you need to have somebody arguing the other side. Here, you have to have somebody who has security clearance saying no, no, no. Hold up. This is not verified. This is not good.”

Best way to fix it is prison terms and a few executions for treason
