Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, warned that the spread of Chinas deadly coronavirus in the United States is all but certain and said Americans everyday life could be dramatically affected.
As more and more countries experience community spread, successful containment at our borders becomes harder and harder, Messonnier told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.
Its not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses, the top public health official added. Disruption to everyday life might be severe.
Messonnier said the continued spread of the virus has led to a shift to a more dire tone.
The data over the last week and spread in other countries has certainly raised our level of concern, and raised our level of expectation that we are going to have community spread here, so that has changed our tone, she said.
The illness that originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan has now infected more than 80,000 people globally. 77,000 cases have been confirmed in China with others in parts of Europe and the Middle East.
To date, 57 cases have been confirmed in the U.S., including 40 cases of people who the government transported from the Diamond Princess cruise ship from Japan.
The virus spread caused the U.S. stock market to plunge.
An expected rebound after Mondays 1,000-point nosedive on Wall Street had yet to materialize by midday Tuesday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down nearly 500 points by 1 p.m. EST. The S&P 500 was down about 50 points and the Nasdaq 122 points.
The 10-year Treasury yield hit a record low of 1.32 percent Tuesday while the 30-year bond also fell.

They are ignoring the other countries that seemed to have stopped the spread.

I would add Vitimin D also.
It probably will be true only for the Reality Based cohort. And they already do think like that anyway.
It’s a gene that affects the lining of the lung. It’s already known to make Asians way more vulnerable to SARS, itself another coronavirus.
Oh noes, the corona virus. Better vote for Bernie, Biden or Buttigieg so they can save us!
The upside is the Democrat presidential field are a bunch of losers. Stiffs. Even if we get a full pandemic (hopefully not), Trump should still cruise to re-election.
Or not. They don’t have a clue. Crises are good though. Helps to consolidate power. You can never have too many crises.
Beginning in mid January 1000s of Chinese students returned from Winter Break in China to their American colleges. Perhaps 12,000 Chinese students in the Greater Boston area alone. Why has there been not even the hint of an outbreak in cities with large Chinese student populations? There has been enough incubation time. At least 30 days.
I read somewhere that Vit. D3 is good to take too.
Just did — again.
Am I the only one who remembers that when the President was busy responding to this when it first broke, the Democrats were busy impeaching the President?
I sure hope the President hits them with this.
“Dr. Nancy Messonnier Rod Rosenteins sister.”
Exactly. Yet another attack on Trump and Wen the People.

Maybe because there are over 1.3 billion people in China and most of them are not infected.

Yup. Reposted on post #91.
China and India.
I take 5,000IU daily.
Thanks; missed it.
See post 91.
That was still very early. The alarm was raised by that doctor in China who was Wuhancided, before it got widespread. Wuhan was quarantined on Jan 23. So there was only a week window from mid January until most of the afflicted were locked down. Then the President started halting travel (and got chastised for that) and airports started screenings and so forth. So you can credit prompt action by Trump for part of it. Still, it did get out to the rest of China, HK and some other places. And it is clear that the incubation period can be widely variable. And the test kits suck, with massive numbers of false negatives.
The success, so far, has been due to very aggressive containment efforts (although I would like even more). Some more successful than others. As long as we can stamp out any given outbreak before it gets completely loose we’ll be okay.
