China wont be a nation of silent lambs in the face of malicious insults and smearing, a spokesman with the countrys foreign ministry vowed on Monday, as Beijing continued to lash out at The Wall Street Journal over a commentary it has deemed racist.
Zhao Lijian, a former senior diplomat in Pakistan, made the remarks while hosting his first press conference since being named deputy director of the Chinese foreign ministrys information office in August.
His comments came a week after Beijing expelled three reporters with the New York-based newspaper over an opinion piece headlined China is the real sick man of Asia.
The opinion piece, written by Walter Russell Mead, a professor at Bard College in New York, and published on February 3, said the Covid-19 crisis was a reminder that Chinas power remained brittle.
The headline triggered condemnation among Chinese internet users, saying it was derogatory and stereotyped Chinese people as disease-ridden and unclean.
The decision to revoke the reporters credentials was announced hours after the US declared that several Chinese media outlets were foreign missions, saying they were effectively under government control.
The Journal has fudged the issue and dodged responsibility with the excuse of independence between news coverage and opinions, Zhao said in the first face-to-face briefing since the coronavirus outbreak forced conferences to be shifted online three weeks ago.
It is out of reason. Who is in charge of The Wall Street Journal? Who should apologise?
The Wall Street Journal has the arrogance for abusive expression, but how come it does not have the courage to apologise? Zhao said. There is only one media agency called the WSJ. Since it insists on going its own way, it should bear the corresponding consequences.

The Yellow Peril? Oh well. Everyone knows thats racist!
Hi.
“deputy director of the Chinese foreign ministrys information office in August.”
Kinda like our DNC and media.

.
Thin skin?
They are. That's reality.
Pretty hard to look at the stats so far and not have thoughts along these
lines.
I think we can all agree that it's terrible the Chinese people are
having to deal with this level of death and destruction.
That's not really a slam on anyone.
Maybe it's time to start spending more waking hours trying to prevent this
in the future, than on new military equipment since no one is looking to
invade.
Maybe you shouldn't be thinking of poking other nations with a sharp stick.
Take care of your people, and leave others alone.
It’s a historical term going back over a hundred years. It’s a variation on sick man of Europe, which predates sick man of Asia.
The Chinese Communists used the term themselves in their revolutionary propaganda. Even today Xi Jinping uses the term to brag how the Chinese Communist Party turned China from being the sick man of Asia into a global superpower.
That’s why the ChiComs are so touchy about the term.
The Chinese are a highly sensitive society easily humiliated when it comes to pretty much anything which critiques them......saving face is all consuming, running a huge thread throughout the country and it’s leadership.
They are communists. There are no greater liars on Earth. They use the word “racism” knowing full well the article isn’t racist.
Having been to Asia I can state that China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam , etc are probably the most racist nations on Earth.
If you looked at history, Almost a third of Europe’s population was wiped out by the Bubonic Plague in the middle ages.
The bubonic plague first emerged in China more than 2,600 years ago. - The disease spread towards Western Europe along the Silk Road, starting more than 700 years ago, and then to Africa. - Plague even came to the United States from China via Hawaii in the late 19th century.
Fortunately, we have a cure for this type of disease today.
But you are right — these plagues from ancient times till today originated from China.
The WSJ should have said “We respect the Chinese People, it’s just the government that sucks raw goat meat.”
And China would reply, “Just wait until you idiots elect Bolshevik Breadline Bernie. At least we still have residual capitalism. The US is screwed, blued, and tatooed.”
As far as I could see the majority...probably the large majority...of China's people still live like savages.
Well, yours is an observation not shared by the main stream media, academics, senior government officials, and the crazed leftists... all who believe China is invincible. Even the cool billionaire capitalist Jimmy Rogers has his kids studying Chinese, not that there is anything bad in that but...
May I add that you have actually been there and seen with your own eyes the conditions in China. There is a huge disparity in the idea of China between those who have been there and those who only read about China. You are spot on, with the exception of using the word 'savages' when you probably meant to say living a bare basic lifestyle. China has no hope as it is, and its turmoil as it tries to adapt will rock the world. But only rock, then all will be stable, but China will have changed forever. Forget about expansionism and taking over the world...Never happen.
“Sick man of Asia” was a derogatory term for China referencing the inability to get things done in general and the huge Chinese population of Chinese opiate addicts in particular during the nineteenth and early twentieth century when the British and sometimes other western powers flooded China with Opium and blocked a succession of Chinese governments from clearing out the drug trade.
Indeed, part of the reason Mao was able to take over China was because Chang Kai-check was in bed with the drug trade and Truman was unwilling to withdraw support and award it to some other Chinese contender who was neither beholden to the drug trade nor a communist.
Given a situation where the only two choices were for the extent of the Opium problem to continue or giving communism a shot the Chinese chose to get rid of the evil they had endured so long.
It is intellectually void to quip that “they chose poorly” when both of the only available choices were so poor.
Anyone who is even aware of the term “Sick man of Asia” is likely to be aware of the meaning and origin of the term.
Now you can watch Bruce Lee's Fist Of Fury and catch some of the references.

In Chinese History, that is a very charged thing to say.
A bit like publishing the N word and slavery in relation to Africa.
I was think contemporary times, last hundred years or so, but that’s an interesting point.
In 40 years China has gone from not being able to produce enough food to feed it's people to a supposed super-power. Yet all they really are is a paper tiger. The entire society is massively corrupt and lacks any type of morality, other than to accumulate money and power. When the SFHTF within their own country, and the Corona virus could be the match that finally lights the powder keg that is China, they are going to implode. If you spend any time around the current group of Chinese immigrants from China you find out several interesting things:
1. They are generally very hard workers
2. They all hate China
3. The corruption and moral decline in China is beyond belief
4. Most still believe that the U.S. needs to become more Socialist
