I did not know that the Amish were allowed to drive, nor that they had a German presence.
These things typically happen for one of two reasons: An old driver has a mental vapor lock or a terrorist goes into terrorist mode.
Since this is being called “deliberate” we can eliminate the old driver scenario.
‘Humanitarian crisis’ driver.
29 year old German citizen from the region. No motive yet.

I was about to mention the Amish but you beat me to it :)
Lets not jump to conclusions ... yet
The Amish (/ˈɑːmɪʃ/; Pennsylvania German: Amisch; German: Amische) are a group of traditionalist Christian church fellowships with Swiss German Anabaptist origins. They are closely related to, but distinct from, Mennonite churches.
Damn Amish, up to no good again...

As bizarre as it might sound, Ill wait to see what the UK papers have to say. They are usually the most unfiltered of the news sources.
“German citizen” could be euphemism for 2nd generation Muslim.
I think it’s the “Fasching”, a kind of festival time of year in that part of Germany (Hesse).
Some sources call it Rose Monday, a kind of prelude to Ash Wednesday like Mardi Gras.
Absolutely. But right now it’s being reported as a local resident, non terrorism related. For now. Or could be neo-Nazi white supremacist related. We’ll see, I guess.
German media said the driver deliberately broke through plastic barriers set up by police around the parade area, where 1,500 people were expected to gather.
driver is lucky to be alive
“One witness, Elmar Schulten, told Bild that he saw many small children on the ground. Police had to protect the driver as carnival marchers, including parents of some of those injured, rushed furiously towards him, Schulten said.”
Clearly, the world needs more assault car control laws.
Sounds like it would have been an appropriate application of the "he needed killing" defense.
