Trump said he’d like to abolish FISA: Report

President Trump reportedly told Attorney General William Barr that he wanted to do away with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

In a discussion last year about reauthorizing the spying law, Trump said he would rather abolish the law altogether than overhaul it, according to Axios.

Barr told Trump reauthorization was needed, without any changes, for national security reasons. Several provisions of the law are set to expire in less than a month.

“I trust you, Bill, but if it was up to me, we’d get rid of the whole thing,” Trump said, according to a source familiar with the conversation.

The discussion happened several months before the Justice Department’s independent watchdog released a blistering report on its investigation into alleged surveillance abuses against the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

He can. By vetoing whatever bill contains the reathorizations.

We don't need secret courts with secret powers and secret warrants.

Where FISA is concerned, I am reminded of the "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" axiom! It is an important tool for national security but obviously became so routine that oversight became minimal!

He really is the best president ever!

This is the rest of the story from the original source.https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/

The discussion happened several months before the Justice Department's independent watchdog released a blistering report on its investigation into alleged surveillance abuses against the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz found 17 “significant inaccuracies and omissions” in the FBI's applications to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to wiretap former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. The Justice Department later determined that at least two of the four warrants were invalid.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers has been working on a number of potential reforms to the surveillance law, including mandatory, random audits of applications and requiring the bureau to turn over exculpatory evidence when pursuing warrants. The FBI and the FISA court itself have also been considering and implementing reforms following the inspector general's investigation.

The simple fact that the FISA Court is not upset about the FBI lying to them proves they are corrupt. If this was done in an honest and open court the Judge would have taken action against the people who deliberately provided false information.

The FISA courts silence and lack of prosecutions speak volumes.

“Barr told Trump reauthorization was needed, without any changes, for national security reasons. “

Oh right...it’s working so well William. All in the name of “national security”. Just like “for the children”.

Anything the government makes secret, by it’s own definition is not transparent. In other words, there is little to no oversight to any secret operation. Power hungry narcissists with unlimited secret funding can do anything they want and use “in the interest of national security” to cover their abuse of power.

FISA needs to go away. Overhauling it gives the politicians a chance to make it worse. Think DHS that was supposed to solve federal law enforcement issues - it only made another bureaucratic nightmare.

There is a downside...it will become easier for terrorists to strike here.

But if we want to live in a country with free elections, life can be tough, and perhaps we work on other means to deal with terrorists (you know, but not inviting them into the country in the first place, for example).

Sorry...Barr is right....Perhaps 911 wouldn't have happened. After the Towers were bombed when Bubba was President, he did nothing....absolutely nothing to make sure nothing like that happened again....just said...we'll catch and prosecute.

Remember the Gorelick wall.

And Devin Nunes — who seems to spend half his time running around on TV complaining about FISA abuses — was the Intelligence Committee head who was pushing to renew the FISA law in 2018.

These people in government are full of sh!t.

Under what purported authority was this “court” established?

The most recent terrorist attack in the U.S. was carried out by a Saudi national WHO WAS BEING TRAINED AT A F#&%ING U.S. MILITARY BASE.

All the surveillance in the world can’t overcome mental retardation and outright corruption in government.

Let your congressman know. Keep bugging them to not vote to reauthorize it. That’s all we can do short of other radical moves.

“Oh right...it’s working so well William.”

Did you ever notice that they never give examples of how well the rubber stamp FISA court has thwarted terrorism?

The only example we have despite all its redacting is how the US government criminally violated the law to spy on Americans and in particular the opposition Presidential candidate and what were the consequences? How many other cases are there of FISA abuse? It is the perfect set-up wherein government crimes can be committed.

FISA should be abolished as there is no mechanism or will to enforce the rule of law when the government breaks the law. And the big joke “independent” political judiciary is out of its league and is as responsible for allowing this happen. If there was ever a situation for the AG to appoint a special counsel, this was it.
