Danielle Outlaw, who took over Monday as Philadelphias new police commissioner, said the nail polish she wore this week had been among the last things on her mind on her first day on the job.
But while making the rounds and introducing herself to the troops, Outlaw said, people kept pointing out that her black nail polish technically violated the departments directives on appearance.
So in one of her first official actions as top cop, Outlaw changed the rule to allow for more stylish nails. And during an interview Wednesday, one of her first since taking over, Outlaw the first black woman to lead the 6,500-member department said that although the action might have seemed narrow, it reflects the type of broader change she believes is needed in policing.
Its the small things that allow us to feel not only welcome but supported, she said. Its one thing to recruit me and say, Oh yes, we want you. But if theres no support system in place to say, Not only do [we] want you, but we celebrate you and we recognize that you bring [something] different, ... were not going to get the people that we say that we want.

Outlaw.
Fitting.
Its better to look good than to Feel good
Fernando’s Credo
I suppose the women officers will sport them 4 inch nails on their trigger fingers.
356 homicides last year, and one of the first actions of the female police chief is to allow more colorful nails.
I’m sick of always seeing five-foot-four, 135-pound women sheriff deputies in sanctuary Hillsborough County, Florida. Forgive me for not feeling safe anywhere near them. Will the “equality” insanity ever end in this country?
At least they can run after the perp and radio for help, what about the 5'4" 200 pound deputies.
Come to Fort Pierce, we have a 5’-2” 240lb, Police Chief. She is worthless. Still hasn’t controlled the shootings in the NW section of the city.
I’m really surprised the Chief doesn’t have to be physically fit.
I knew it without even having to look.
I caint shoot the MF-er! I jus’ done did my nails.
Ah, power to change the rules is wonderful! ;-)
Has the power already gone to her head?
Good riddance. From Portland.
This is what blacks vote for
Beautiful isnt it
Thank goodness I can finally express myself and the differences that I bring as a Philadelphia police officer.
To her hair.
Are the eyebrows real? (Meow)
